Insurance came up for renewal today on the old vette and some of you may know how p*ssed off I've been by being limited to 5000 miles a year especially as my previous company refused to increase the miles despite what they said when I first took out the policy.

So in the hunt for a different company who would cover me for at least 7500 miles I sent off for an online quote with Adrian Flux yesterday morning.

As I had heard nothing by 5 pm and I had also never received a reply from a previous online quote I thought I'd phone them.

Anyway they quoted me £623 for 7500 miles inc European cover. As my old insurance company wanted £500 to renew for 5,000 miles (not inc Euro cover) I said "send me the quote anyway as it may be worth paying a bit more for the extra cover".

Meanwhile I just received their online quote which provisionally showed £400!!!

On phoning and querying this they came back with a quote of £440 for 7500 miles with 90 days European cover, car value 15k and I made sure they put "Callaway" on the documents (don't want to claim and they just pay out for a regular 'vette {nice though they are}...)Only difference was the higher quote must have been with another company as it included driving other cars. They must have not known about this new company last night when they quoted me on the 'phone?

Paid for the cover on the 'phone so I'm insured for another year (still might sell it later though).

I don't know what this proves, maybe get an online quote and a phone quote from the same company...

I am looking to insure my 2001 vette and have hand numerous laughable quotes, and then got down to a couple about 3 weeks ago.....

Adrian Flux - £873 - Unlimited Mileage - £500 excess
Elephant £950 - 10K Miles £350 excess

Then about a week ago:
- Rang AF about 3 days ago to add my g/f on and price stayed the same.....
- Updated Elephant to add the g/f - Went down to £813!

Yesterday:
Went on again to re-confirm the Elephant (made no changes at all!) and it was £854!
But they even sent me an email saying 813 was valid until end June.... God knows whats happening

I went with Hill House Hammond as they were the most flexible (unlimited mileage) and weren't banging on about fitting a Thatcham type alarm. They also answered their phone (unlike MCE).

That's another thing, I've always insisted I don't add another alarm to the already complex C4 system.

I know some people have done so successfully but I think a C4 has enough spaghetti (look under the dash, behind the panels, it's unbelievable) without adding anything.

Imagine throwing an aftermarket alarm into the equation if the b*stard won't start...

Also imagine the arguments between GM and the alarm fitter if problems were encountered - both would blame the other. Best to leave well alone, I say.

My best quote for the Z06 came from Hill House. Again, Flux banged on about an immobiliser so no thanks and MCE's automated waiting system didn't amuse me at all.

Elephant are Admiral by any other name as are Diamond and several others. It's all marketing and they'll flog you the highest priced policy you'll happily pay to earn their crust. Just tell them you have a lower quote and watch it fall. My guess is that internet users aren't on line to bs and will just walk away from a high quote so they quote a lower one automatically.

I've found the solution to aftermarket alarms.
