Broadcast TV will not be transmitting 1080p signals anytime this decade, at least not full-on - a smattering or trials in certain regions, so the benefit of sitting close to a Full HD TV is still the preserve of BR movies & natively rendered games.
Aside though from the resolution, the TV manufacturers put better panels/technology (processing algorithms) and extra 'useful/desirable' features, so there's more to simply deciding on how many pixels there are in your field of view.
If it were that straight forward, BR uptake in hardware and media would be as dead as the Dodo bird, and everyone would be content with just their HD Ready TV.

so in short... you are saying something magical happens, and I will see a significant difference between my HD ready TV, and a full HD tv when just watching HD TV.

confused
I though what I wrote was fairly self-explanatory.

Full HD TVs are 1920x1080 pixels, a BR movie is 1920x1080, therefore each pixel is mapped 1:1 on the display. To fully see the extra definition you need to sit closer due to how the eye's acuity works.

HD Ready TVs are 1366x768 (1024x720 on 37 Plasma) by and large, and Broadcast HD transmissions are 1280x720 or 1920x1080i.
Due to how an interlaced signal is de-interlaced, you don't end up with a Full HD, but rather something with around 820 vertical lines of resolution.
As a result, all TVs will have to scale (up or down) the signal to make it fit the available number of pixels.

That's the technical side of it - your purchase decision may be based on how nice/thin the TV looks, the picture quality, the various features you may or may not ever use, number of HDMI inputs, futureproofing, etc.

As I said above, the Full HD TVs have the better displays, more connectivity/features, so the manufacturers are steering you towards those, in the hope you'll buy their BR player/BR-based surround system as well.
If BR is NEVER going to feature (not even streaming or USB device connected) in your life, then technically an HD Ready TV is all you need.
PQ wise though, the Full HD one will have better contrast ratio/blacks, control adjustments, which you may appreciate.

So it all boils down to what you feel suits your needs best, now and however long into the future before you'd think of replacing it.

You did explain yourself to start of with smile ... I was just looking for a simple answer about HDTV and it's compatability/quality of picture with HD Ready and Full HD sets..... just to satisfy my curiosity.

Got the blu-ray sony bd550, and surround sound Yamaha dsp e800 processor/Roksan Kandy 111 amp/Monitor Audio's silver 5is /10i front, mission 7ds rear, dali suit SWA 12....... yes my processor probably needs updating but it sounds ok to me at present, and yes i am considering a new tv as 1) never been imprssed with the pic and 2) I sit 13ft away from the screen and 40" looks lost..... how I ever manged with a 28inch crt wide screen is beyond me hehe

As I suspected from reading you're 13 from a 40, you're not even able to fully appreciate HD Broadcasts, nevermind worrying about BR movies.
Either up the screen size to at least a 50 or arrange your seating layout so that you're no more than 8-9' from the TV.
