Damn indeed. But I'm sure we all appreciate that the 'list' couldn't be kept open indefinitely. The "four PHers" referred to are chaps who put their names down, but failed to contact Gruffy when prompted for payment and delivery addresses etc. Now (it's not a dig at you, by the way) the Jerseys thread has been running for an age, and is always close to the top of the front page, and the 'list' (Wiki) was up for quite a while. Gruffy clearly stated that the closing date for orders would be strict, yet he added me (by PM) to the list after it was due to finish, and allowed people to join on right up to the payment deadline. He, and John, I believe, have undertaken a lot of work on this one, and have been the very definition of "harsh, but fair" in setting a closing date for payments/orders. It's a shame that you have missed another run of Jerseys, I know how you feel, having missed out on the first two runs myself, simply by not reading the PP forum regularly enough. Hopefully, the more of these jerseys that are seen, and mentioned in 'spotted' threads, the higher the likelihood that there'll be another run (when demand ramps up again) or we might even see them in the 'shop' as demand, and commitment to buy, has been proven now beyond a doubt.

Big thanks to Gruffy for all the work done on this batch so far. I'm now looking forward to wearing the new 'red' jersey with as much pride as I do the 'yellow' one.

Shhhhh! If'n he don't realise that we realise, we might be able to manipulate it, so that the jerseys would be available from the shop all year round wink

Seriously, though. Having the Jerseys in the shop has been suggested many times. The problem as I see it is the way the shop works. There doesn't seem to be any 'stock' of anything, and it's all (or at least almost all) supplied by SDITH. Reading between the lines, they supply stuff 'on demand', printing up finished t-shirts or mugs from 'blanks' they hold as stock, same as the vinyl stickers, cut and prepared as needed. The trouble with that is a) SDITH don't appear to have experience of making/supplying quality technical sportsware, and b) those companies (like OWAYO) who do have experience with such garments almost always have set-up costs and therefore minimum order levels to achieve before they'll fulfill an order. Hence why we've always had to wait for the perfect storm of a willing volunteer to heroically manage the order, along with firm demand to keep costs down, before a batch could be run off.

There's no harm in dropping a hint here and there, though wink

(especially now that Mr Drake has indicated his desire to own such a thing)

Tricky one.

For some perspective, there are 18 different jerseys in the current batch of 112 when you factor in the two jersey types and the different sizes. Managing stock levels on a product line like that would be a losing battle, especially when they are something of a niche product to your main audience, however large PH is. To combat this the price would have to go up dramatically (150-200%) to avoid making a loss on unsold stock and that's before we even consider that PH is a business and would need to add a little margin.

As nice as it would be to just order a jersey from the PH shop I'm not sure it's commercially viable. Having done it ourselves it feels a little more special anyway, like a proper community/club rather than part of the big PH machine.

Given that this is the third run there doesn't seem to be a shortage of naive idiots willingly stepping forward to coordinate things wink

I completely agree, personally, with all that, Gruffy. My local cycling club works the same way as we (you) are currently doing it, with a couple of batches per year, usually run when there's an influx of new members. The stock issue is the sticking point for the shop, because, like I said, there doesn't appear to be an actual 'PistonHeads Shop' premises, mail order or otherwise. It's all farmed out to SDITH, who print T-shirts, etc 'as and when required'. Like you say, the sheer variation in sizes and styles precludes the holding of 'stock' of something like a cycle jersey. And yes, I think the shirts are, like you say, that much more special when they are limited run items made to order.

The result of that buying-on-demand, though, is that they can offer hundreds of designs in all sizes. Think of the potential stock requirement to be able to offer that; it's insane!

There always used to be a PH Shop (it was run by Kinky's wife, Sue - and a fabulous job she did of it too). But as the site grew larger, requirements for varied designs and niche forum requests (remember - Pedal Powered isn't the only niche forum) meant the variance was massive.

I have to admit I have no idea on the details! eek

Just that when I log in, some (not all things) the price gets reduced. Given they said I had to buy something over £68 by the 30June. It must go back to whenever I first bought something last year. Sorry I can't be more help.
Mine said july 24th x amount for gold, so I think it's a personal year from date of first purchase.

Well just to update this. Had an email the other day from them saying I need to spend £19 by the end of July to carry on the Plat discount. Sent them an irritated email saying "you said that end of June and I spent OVER that, surely I have another year"

Response was that it's rolling 365 days. rolleyes

So it's hardly the great scheme they imply it is. To be fair, I always compare between them and CRC. And buy cheapest/stock level anyway. It won't stop me using them because ultimately they have very little competition.

Oh and some new tyres as my GP4000s had finally given up the ghost.

Those look like Far Sports 50mm rims - what spec did you go for?

I ended up with 50mm with 25mm width, holeless rims, red Bitex hubs with Sapim cx-delta spokes with red nipples - 24/28H (uprated). They look and ride great - they feel so much better than the Zipp 404 Firecrests they replaces at a fraction of the cost - madness!

Ah makes sense, also makes sense to ignore those messages now for me unless I have a big spend on the horizon.

I've seen a fair few sets of Farsport rims and they look very similar to mine but I got my wheels from 2011cycling2011 on eBay.

The rims are 25mm wide and 50mm deep built on novatec hubs with sapim aero spokes. I've been really impressed with them. It is madness, something like 20% the RRP of a pair of Zipps.

As you rightly say, SDITH make all of the merchandise on demand - it is a great business model for our needs (in that we like to have somewhere in the region of 1 million different t shirts to choose from!). More technical garments like a proper cycling jersey are harder to arrange - as you say it takes a hero to do it for the greater good.

However, perhaps in future we can look at some other ways to support the process... thinking cap firmly on!
