Police now state they were NOT trying to buy drugs but had just accepted an offer for a lift home from the wrong people frown

Thanks for fixing the title Mods.

From the link above:

Telegraph said:
James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, were in Florida when they were killed at 3am in a gangland area rarely visited by tourists.

They apparently accepted a lift from someone they met in a bar, thinking they were being driven home.

A 16 year-old, named locally as Shawn Tyson (left), was charged with their murder. It emerged yesterday that he was freed by a judge last week despite being arrested over an armed robbery.

The bodies of Mr Cooper, a tennis coach who once played Andy Murray, and Mr Kouzaris were found riddled with bullets on a one-way street in the estate, known for drug dealing and gang activity. Police are investigating the theory that the pair spent the night bar hopping in Sarasota.

Officers suspect they believed they were being driven the 12 miles to the resort of Longboat Key.

Instead, they were taken to Newtown, Sarasota, where they were confronted by a gang of masked men.

Police sources said both men were running away when they were shot. Their bodies were found 50ft apart. They still had money on them and police found no evidence to suggest they had been wanting to buy drugs.
This hasn't really got the media attention it deserves imo.

Yesterday it was the lead story in pretty much all the media. What more coverage do you want?

There's still something not quite right about this. If they were being robbed in a planned sting there's no way they would have been "riddled" with bullets - it'd only take a couple at close range. You wouldn't empty a full clip just for the hell of it in a state that has the death penalty.

Without wishing to open up a whole new debate, I don't think the ramifications go through someone's mind in those situations. Since he's already been convicted or carrying a weapon I doubt the thought of spending the rest of his life on death row (where he could well have a greater life expectancy) will matter much

Freed by a judge last week... are they getting like us, or are we getting like them?
We even have some no-go areas here now.

Very sad story. Hope he rots in hell (as he has been charged with murder, but where do the gang of masked men come in?).

This story doesn't make any sense, why were they in the car with him? Their killer sounds like a fairly typical gang member, someone they wouldn't even talk to if they were in the UK.

Some items...

1. it's magazine not clip

2. Florida is a death penalty State so chances are high that said scrote will be eternal dirt napping before this is over

3. When on holiday in Florida, try not to accept lifts from just any person that you have just met (especially not one that looks like said scrote). While Florida's cabbies may not be the most pleasant in the world, they, at least, won't drop you off in the middle of the hood so that you can become midnight entertainment for the local 'crew'

...Oh, yes - and...

4. They are called 'projects' in the US, not 'housing estates'. 'Ghetto' or 'hood' may also be descriptive.

Projects really means (run down) council estate or block of council flats, a housing estate belonging to people who own their homes is called a subdivision or sub for short.

I don't think their killer was the driver.

My hunch is that we were a bit the worse for waer for drink (no issue with that - they were on hols) and got a lift from the wrong person who dumped them in that location.

Tell you one thing. It's put me off going to Florida. This no-go area was only 12 miles from their hotel.

Don't be silly. There are plenty of "desirable" parts of London within half that distance from Buckingham Palace!

There's a lot of things about this dreadful story which seem not to add up.

I wouldn't let that put you off, in London where I live I dread to think how many "no go" areas are within a 12 mile radius frown

Been all over Florida many many times. Never any issues.... then again I don't accept lifts from total strangers or go down dark alleys off the beaten track.

Wrong thing to do anywhere in the world.

I don't think their killer was the driver.
But he'll fry for it though. If he was complicit in this action (eg knowingly driving them to their deaths) then he's on death row with the shooter. Florida law sees him equally liable for the deaths as the guy who pulled the trigger.

This case will break sooner than later as everyone involved is looking at the death penalty. Someone somewhere sooner than later will confess for a lighter sentence.

Definitely do not go to South Africa - the land where no matter where you are, a no-go area is but a few steps away.

I actually do love SA, great place.

I have been to Florida a few times and never strayed from the tourist areas and we have been fine.

Just because someone gets shot somewhere like Moss side it wouldn't stop you going to Blackpool, The Lakes or The Trafford Centre would it?
