I have 2 extra days holiday than SWMBO and was thinking of using them to disappear on the bike for a few days, maybe take a thursday & Friday and make 4 days of it.

I have one problem, I haven't done anything like this before and have no idea where to go? Any ideas and advice?

I'm based in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey so it would involve leaving from there, I would need to stay in B&B's a circuit would be good or maybe ride and train back, or vice-a-versa.

Road bike or MTB? Leisurely plod or head down and peddle?

If MTB I would be tempted to head south, pickup the South Down's way for a leisurely cycle to Winchester then through the New Forest towards Bournemouth then a train home.

If I were road-biking it, I would either head North West and follow the Chilterns towards Hereford and see how far I got (then grab a train home). Or, point South West and head towards Devon/Cornwall - again see how far I got then catch the train home. . . .

I am sure others will be along with more structured routes but the above would be my suggestion(s). . . .

This is a handy tool if you do plan a road ride; http://www.cyclestreets.net/

Head for Lizard Point (much nicer than Lands End) and give it a go! It's about 300 miles so you will need to be hitting 75 miles a day, Exeter onwards gets a tad hilly!

Leisurely ride to Paris? Lift back on the Eurostar?
