Mooching around looking at LS motors I came across the corvette transaxles which seem to be a

T56 transmission case bolted to the diff housing. This all connects to the motor with a small bell housing and a torque tube with a propshaft running down the middle of it...

Does anyone know any more about these, i've been googling for some technical info or diagrams on how it all works but nothing so far.

where does the clutch sit in this at the back of the engine or the front o the gearbox?

Im wondering how feasible it would be to mod a tuscan chassis to take one of these. Obviously the torque tube and prop would need modifying, and some tube work, but interesting if it will fit..

There probably isnt enough room but an interesting thought

cheers

Clutch sits on the engine in the usual place under a normal bellhousing.

Ta boosted..

So is this a standard bell housing with an adaptor where the gearbox would mount to or a separate part.

as the clutch is in the bell housing then I assume I could modify the reciever housing at the gearbox end to make it a bit smaller scratchchin

cheers

Graham, I've done some quick look/see measurement on the transaxle with a view to fitting one to a Chimaera chassis and it pans out that the transmission tunnel would have to be about 4inches wider each side just where my pelvis would like to be, so figured a six speed T56 on an LS engine from a Pontiac GTO would be a better bet. Happy for someone to tell me otherwise though, this was just done scaling off photos from rolling chassis on eBay.

Graham, the layout in the pic you posted looks standard/factory. As you know the vette has a different gearbox to the other lsx engines. It's an MM12 or something like that. You should be able to make things smaller if you wanted to.

This is what I have left after shunting back the ls1 in a Griff/Chim chassis, you would have to question if it's worth going to a transaxle,I think changing the diff and box ratio's for optimin performance would be a pain.

yikes thats short, although a Tuscan racer has a slightly longer wheelbase than a chim/griff but not by much..

I take it you chopped the chassis to get the motor further back? which gearbox did you use?

Ideally I'd love to use a drenth or a hollinger , but im skint, so that points to tko or t56. the guys i know with tko hate the shift and the t56 is big.

Hi Graham
I modified the top rails, everything was made to suit the t56 untill I junked the idea and now have a Cerb front shifter t5 and will be fitting G force internals and 26 spline input shaft.
Stick with the Glebe t5,the finished LS1 car here managed to stuff the Glebe at 450hp,so a steel cased retainer was made for the input and layshaft bearing and no probs with over 500hp.
Mail me if you want more info,we have mucked around with all sorts of bellhousings and adaptor plates for the LS.
