Noble M12.
Exciting, dramatic but just too unreliable with a crappy interior.
996tt at least as fast but much more usable.

A C4, with Aerokit.
The turbo is dramatically more impressive.

See, If I go for a 996 I have to sell my Cosworths, which I really don't want to do, but I have been offered a friends beautiful turbo at very sensible money, it has everything on the spec wish list I would want as well! It has really put me in a awkward position as it is the ideal car, and would save months of trawling the ads for the spec & condition I would want. He looked for 8 months at lots of cars before he bought this one.... I hate decisions!

If you're really devoted to your Cosworths, the only way to decide is to ask your friend to let you get insured on his car and take it for a drive.

You'll know in the first 20 mins what to do.

ETA: mine replaced an S4. The turbo trounces it in every department bar boot space.

MK V Golf R32.

It was the perfect car for my needs at the time; 4WD, 5 door, biggish boot, gorgeous to look at, fine handler, great sound...but oh so underpowered.

Anyways, need for practicality reduced, so tentatively put car up for sale whilst searching for my 996t; but secretly hoped no one would buy it and that I would 'have' to keep it alongside the pork. Sadly, within a few hours of it going up for sale, a friend's sister came round and bought it there and then; I was, and remain, gutted! But boy did I buy a peach, which took the sting out a little!

Good luck!

I had a Tvr T350 with a Tvr power 4.3 engine, owned it for 4 yrs and enjoyed every second
I only sold it as we needed 4 seats

When I first drove the Porsche turbo I thought it felt slow and dull compared and I sure missed the Tvr exhaust note

Several months in and I have had it remapped and I'm now loving it

Still miss the Tvr but the Porsche ain't bad for a family car !

Tough call with the way Cossies's are going value wise.
996TT is an epic car i loved mine, but as it was a weekend car it was too refined quiet for my liking.
I now have a GT2 faster/rawer/noisier seat of your pants type of experience, very rare and gorgious to look at. Perfect for the 2k miles i will do in a yr.

I had a TVR Tuscan with a 4.3 engine upgrade, then a 997 GT3, and now a very late 996 Turbo S (and another bedroom!). I've basically gone progressively more refined and usable over the past few years.

The GT3 had all the feel of the Tuscan, but lacked the hypercar bothering straight line pace and quite a lot of the visual drama. It did feel completely unbreakable though, and was wonderfully communicative. By contrast, the Turbo is much easier to drive quickly, and starts to approach Tuscan pace again with all that torque. The thing that surprised me is that it doesn't feel numb and distant to drive, far from it. The main disappointment is the noise. Compared to your Cosworths, I suspect you will love the blistering all weather pace, turbo shove in the back, and the solid build quality. You might just feel that it's a bit too accomplished, if that makes sense.

Drive it and see. I hadn't expected to buy a 996 Turbo to replace the GT3, but a long test drive won me over.

993 Targa which was a lovely car and very easy to work on. The Turbo is just so much better as an all round fast car. Think I might get another air cooled Porsche to go with it though.

E46 M3, was my previous ride. The 996t is better dynamically, but it's electrical bling is years behind.

I bought my 996T & then sold my 996 C4 Cabriolet. I much prefer the sunroof to the convertible, and the 'mid range punch' is just amazing.

E39 M5 and amazingly it took a little while to realise the turbo was quicker because it wasn't night and day by any means. Obviously the turbo scored over the M5 in agility and sense of occasion.

In fact (having been a bit of a Porsche fan for a while) the overriding memory of driving home was the looking around me and seeing those gorgeous curves in the mirrors and in the rear of the car as those iconic windows slope away into that classic Porsche shape.

Didn't take long before I totally began to 'get' the porsche thing, but the M5 still occupies a cherished place in my car memory.

996 C2 with PSE, which my son now has. Do miss the noise! Other than that the turbo is exceptional. Old and new below

Hmm that's interesting! The 996 turbo is one of my 'affordable' dream cars and having owned an E39 M5 I have to say I would be disappointed if the 996 wasn't significantly quicker.

(may go back to looking at cerberas for the pwr)

I think it took a little while for the me to get used to the delivery and to get the most out of it and perhaps it'd been pussied with for a little while by the PO I don't know. It certainly ended up feeling darned fast. Well until I got the GT2 anyhow.
