Oh yeah... a woman who used to work for us was married to the son of wimmin's novel writer Pat Barker...
Didn't she live in 'boro anyway? I seem to remember a book (a bit of an ethnography ) called Union Street.
Well, it was Billingham but after the last £££million book deal I suspect she probably lives at Wynyard now
Her son John worked for a company in Cheshire doing corporate entertainment 'do's' (marquee, silver service, that kind of thing); his wife (Pam) who worked for us was a Scouser ( a big girl, about 6' 2"!).
One Easter they went round to see his mother and gave her some flowers: Pat said "Here's a cheque for £100K, go and buy yourselves a house" (it was a few years ago!).
So they buggered off to the Wirral and I've never heard a dickybird since.
Another Scouser who worked for us (Gail Wall) made a bit of a name for herself by managing to get into articles about antiques dealing; she was buying and selling on Ebay. I wonder if the taxman ever caught up with her?

To actually put a car/driving angle on this, I crewed for Mach2 Racing at Pikes Peak in 2004. The driver - Stig Blomqvist. Super cool guy, first night out, he bought us a pitcher of beer and poured one for each of us. The last night we sat up and got him chatting about the rally years, and which cars he liked most, and what the RS200 (EVO article a few months back) needed to make it go from stupendously fast in a straight line, to stupendously fast everywhere. He knows his car stuff, that's for sure!

i was over in ireland for a bit of an old car bash earlier this year, and whilst on the ferry over we noticed ray davies from the kinks wandering round.
later on, we were drinking with one of our irish mates in a bar in kinsale, and in walks ray davies, we point him out to our irish mate, who promtly calls ray over for a chat, turns out he's his brother in law. he really liked all the cars, and we saw him a few times over the course of the weekend, although when we got back, my mother was really miffed as we didn't get his autograph, and she's a big kinks fan.

Mind you I know someone (not me Honest!) who went up to Graham Taylor when he was England manager, didn't quite twig who it was but knew he knew the face.
Anon: "what are you doing at the airport then?"
GT "I'm off to xxxxx to watch a football match"

My brother shouldered Mel Gibson to the ground years ago. He was in Dublin filming Braveheart at the time. After hours my Bro was saying goodbye to his mates and turned to walk away. Except Mr. Gibson happened to be in the way and BOOM. Down he went with quite some gusto! The whole street was gobsmacked, watching the Bro help Mel up. Quite embarrassed.

Was having a coffee in a North London park the other week, when this chap with family sat on the next table. It was Denis Bergkamp, he was trying to have a quiet day out with his family and every knob(apart from us) there insisted on pestering him. Eventually they gave up, got in to his big yank SUV and cleared off.
I was watching this going on, at no point was he anything other than polite - there is clearly a price to pay for everything.
