Durham Police is resuming its recruitment with up to 60 new officers set to be taken on.

The force had previously had a recruitment freeze, which it blamed on financial constraints.

The new recruitment drive will open on 31 October with only the first 1,000 applications to be considered.

Chief constable Mike Barton said: "Policing continues to evolve and remains an excellent career for those wanting to join us."

Application forms will be on the force website from 09:00 GMT on 31 October.

Durham currently has 1,231 police officers, as well as 150 police community support officers and 90 special constables.

More than 1,000 people applied for about 50 officer roles in 2012 when a two-year recruitment freeze was lifted.
