Seeking info on doing things properly rather than making a mess of it! Bought a pleasant old car with a mildly distinctive number (not the original reg no.). It's not particularly valuable, maybe £100, but looks nice. Intend keeping the car when fettled so placed the number on retention cert. and received the original registration number which is more suitable to the car anyway and completes the picture. If I decide to sell the retained number do I merely write on the certificate the name/address of the Nominee (the chap that wants to buy it) in the relevant space? Is it really as simple as that? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that. Yes, it's all done. I have the retention certificate V778 with the number the car had when I bought it and the new V5C with the replacement number (actually the original number at first registration). I know the DVLA pages are pretty good but sometimes they seem to miss bits out!

Thanks gents. I was aware of the section 2 and relevant notes in C overleaf in V778. I too thought that the £105 covered everything but it now seems they want an extra £25 for any admin change! I'm sure that's in the realms of 'Penalty' rather than standard clerical costs. However, there are so many scams about these days I was keen to avoid doing something stupid if and when I decide to sell the number. Not that I don't trust the motor trade of course...

Wouldn't it cost more than £25 to do? £25 to: DVLA, insurance co = £50.
