Hi.

Son's car is booked in for MOT on Monday, has currently expired, now I know he can drive it to the MOT centre on most direct route. Issue is it has very low fuel so would need to go to petrol station first as I believe they can reject the test if low fuel.

Not even a 2 minute detour to closest petrol station so if he was unlucky enough to get stopped by police during this journey would he be prosecuted?

Been a while since I've had a car that needs to have an MOT so not sure myself.

Car is insured and taxed.

The law does not stipulate the distance the MOT test centre should be for a prearranged test. There is no such limiting factor and no stipulation as to 'direct route'.
Thanks. I had a look online and got the impression it was straight to the test on a direct route without stopping for jollies like a trip to Tesco, which is where the petrol station will be.

Didn't think of a jerry can, will do that.

Not terrified, it's just as grown up adults, it's sometimes just better to be safe than sorry rather than a "fk the police" attitude.

You can go over the speed limit see a police car and slow down, you can drive with no MOT, see a police car, their ANPR goes off, you get pulled and are lucky enough to have an officer having a bad day and report it, admittedly being pulled and actually getting reported is very unlikely, but not impossible.

I did think they could reject the test if low fuel, fuel gauge is resting on empty. Been about 5 years since I've had a car go for an MOT and first time for my son.

You're kidding me, right?

The MOT doesn't require a fuel gauge to be fitted or working.
I think you might just be looking for an argument, but I'll humour a response.

I'm not kidding, or I wouldn't have said that. I have never owned a jerry can, never had a need for one, don't think I've even seen one for sale, so genuinely didn't think of it. Still don't have one and will on Monday just go for fuel and spend the rest of my days without the need for a jerry can.

I have my answer now, which I thank you for.

You don't know what you're missing! Surely no-one can be a Real Man without owning a jerry can? It's right up there with a hammer drill, jigsaw and big claw hammer on the list of manly essentials (whether you ever use them or not)!!! biggrin
I will have to make a shopping list. My toolkit is an old biscuit tin with some screwdrivers and allen keys. I'm ashamed.

To answer TooMany2cvs, never really looked for a jerry can, I've seen them I'm sure but not acknowledged their existence, my lawnmower is electric and my car has never come close to running out of fuel before, getting nearly 60mpg helps, although I may get one if it all goes wrong.

I take it that we'll be getting a thread about how you get it back home now, especially as the petrol is now evaporating and pushing your VED rate up.
No, why would I do that? I'm not going to try and get into an argument with you, I asked a question, got reasonable answers and then you came along, if you have an issue with a thread don't post on it. Have you got nothing better to do then try and cause arguments with strangers on the Internet?
It's at the garage waiting to be worked on tomorrow.
