cherished transfer/retention help please

i've got a plate on my car that i wish to put on retention (i'm selling the car, don't want to lose the plate)
i've filled in the V317 form and an about to send it off with my £80 and my existing v5c
current car is 4 years old, and is taxed until end of April and MOT until Sept
what happens when the DVLA send me back a new V5c with a different reg on it? do i get a new MOT cert and new tax until end of April?
or do i have to get the car through a new MOT and tax it again?
because if i do, then there is the problem of having to drive to halfords to get new plates made up, whilst potentially not being legal for tax/mot/insurance etc.
would kind of like to avoid that if poss......
any help gratefully received.....
