Maybe some of the bods on here can put me straight?
I've got a new car coming in a couple of days, which ties in nicely with my old cars insurance running out on the 29th. I've insured the new one from the 29th, and decided to sorn my old car to get the tax back. The car is off road, and for the two days at the end of the month, I will use my bike to get to work. I tried to tax the new one, and it seems it isn't possible to tax it from the 1st of May, so will wait until it is possible.

That's just the background info, here's the question:
I declared my old vehicle sorn, and was unable to do so from the last day of this month, so just clicked through, and it has been declared from the 1st. I have received the refund from the DVLA already, and it is the exact amount that 3 months tax would be (expired 31st July, so refunded for May/June/July). I am concerned that the sorn is for the 1st of this month, but they have kept the tax that was due for this month? Is there an overlap? Will my vehicle flag as sorned/off road, and therefore render me liable for any fines or penalties?
Thanks in advance.

So even though there is no way of sorning from the end of the month, and the fact that I have paid, and they have kept the tax due for it, you cannot use the vehicle you have already paid for?

Good old DVLA eh. Quite a business model they have!
Is nothing simple when dealing with them?

A further thought occurs then.
If I waited until Thursday to declare sorn, it would automatically be dated the first of the month, so any record of the vehicle being on the road between the first and last days of the month, would leave me open to prosecution/penalty/?

....or in short, you can't ever declare sorn without losing a month of your refund?

You're not open to prosecution because they know it was taxed for this month. You don't lose anything because they have refunded you for next month+.
Thanks for that, a simple answer without sarcasm. ;-)

If this ever happens to me again (first time), I will simply wait until the end of the month to declare it.
