wasn't sure if I should put this in here, but as I had a chat with a very pleasant lady from Essex Police yesterday (yes i take it all back).

Had a little accident yesterday afternoon, the gap I thought was big enough for 2 cars to get through wasn't quite big enough and I now have a taped up door mirror, the lady in the other car also has a broken door mirror. My fault I got it wrong and shouldn't have tried to pass the parked car.

As we were both travelling, her much faster than me as I was about to turn left into my doctors, I just carried on into the doctors car park and parked up (all of about 30 yards) tried to put the mirror back into the clips on my car, I didn't notice the lady in the q7 come into the car park.

Anyway, she was obviously shaken up, and I was annoyed (at myself for a stupid move), words were exchanged, and I was called rude (all i said was that it wasn't a big deal, insurance would cover it, i thought she was going a bit fast and there was room, obviously wasn't but the adrenaline was flowing, and I didn't want to admit to myself i'd been a prune).

Anyway, this is the odd bit, she said it will cost me to fix it, i said of course it won't you'll claim on my insurance.

so i went over to my car as she looked like she was going to take a picture of my reg number etc, so i looked for a pen and paper to exchange details, took me maybe a minute to find the pen at the bottom of the cubby box in the car, i turned round and she had gone. she hadn't said anything, just got into her car and gone, i didn't even hear her go. i had suggested she move her car as it was on the yellow hatching in the do not block part of the doctors, but she had gone completely.

so i phoned 101 and they said go into the local station and report it.

so i popped i last night as soon as i could and spoke to the PC on the reception desk, she said it was pointless taking the report as I had no details of the other driver or car. I was going to write it all down when I got the pen and paper.

I said I wanted to come in in case the other driver had said i had left the scene / failed to give details, PC said no I was parking safely as far as she was concerned, and she was happy that I was going to give details, mainly as I'd gone into the station etc. So she said not to worry about the report but gave me her name and number and would happily say I had complied. She also said my attitude wasn't an issue as far as she was concerned.

So i'm now going to phone my insurance company and let them know a claim may come in against me (i won't be claiming, parts are fairly cheap for an old land rover) but I still have no details to give as the other driver didn't wait to exchange them.

i take it that her insurance company would be able to trace mine by the reg number from a photo? i'll have to take any premium hike on the chin, i was the guilty party, i just don't understand why she wouldn't wait for the insurance details from me?

sorry if it's just a cool starry bra post, i've only had 2 my fault accidents in 30 years of driving (this is the 2nd) and only 3 in all. both of the others went the normal way of exchanging and being fixed.

I'd personally not say anything to my insurer unless they contacted me to tell me a claim had been made.

I've read many stories on here of people doing what you plan on doing and ending up having their premiums hiked despite no claim being forthcoming.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to let me know whether this is duff advice or not!
i did wonder, but i am out of the country for a few weeks starting in a weeks time, so i didn't want to come back to a st storm to be honest.

i know it will cost me, the lady at admiral did say if a claim is made that i will lose 2 years NCB, and in fact she can see i haven't had a claim for 15yrs.

i'll just have to see what happens. paying more i expected as i drove into the car park. for the other party to just go i wasn't smile

Do you not protect your NCB then?

I wouldn't worry too much, see if anything happens.
to be honest i thought it was, an oversight from me, as I have checked the wife's and daughters policies this morning and they are both protected.

i feel a double knob this morning

Could this have taken place at a time of day when maybe she had the odd glass of wine
well it was about 3:45 yesterday afternoon, but having known someone that died due to health problems caused by drinking, that's not a big indicator.

my friend, had been known to turn up to pick the kids up from school drunk (thankfully walking / staggering). never smelt anything, but tried not to get too close.

While I would probably go down this route if I was confident she wasn't going to claim, this may not be the best advice.

If her insurance do get in touch with the OP's, they are going to want to know why he didn't report it and it could cause some problems in the long run. I believe LoonR1 is an insurance guy, might be worth waiting to see his thoughts.

I'm pretty sure her insurance company can get your details through your number plate. She probably took a photo and decided to walk as she didn't like your attitude (your comment, not mine. I'm sure it wasn't that bad).
fully agree, insurance company has been informed, and they just said wait and see.

as for my attitude (even my wife said i could have been a bit more compassionate when i told her, what does she know smile), yes i suspect she may have, considering the way she kept on and on etc about her right of way (yes it was, i thought there was enough room, i was wrong) but i think perhaps i wasn't bowing and scraping enough, who knows.

in fact thinking back she never once asked about insurance, just kept ranting about it costing her money. well insurance is there for a reason, i'm now going to have to cough up because i was in a hurry and stupid.

CCTV from the doctors? Just in case.
the accident happened on the road outside the doctors and i was signalling to pull in when it happened.

i don't think they have cameras there as they have houses and a primary school all around, could be worth asking if they have anything to at least get her number.

thanks

OP, I really hope this didn't happen. You'll be posting up about the Section 172 request you may well receive in the next few eeeks mentioning failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failure to exchange details etc next frown . The drone behind the desk should have recorded the incident and given you a log no. as evidence you'd reported the incident - without this and if the desk drone denies your visit... Although they won't prosecute (they generally don't, nowadays), you have no defence (ie the log no. from your reporting the incidemt) if they do prosecute.

You were extremely badly advised by the desk drone.

I would be going back and asking for a log no. ASAP, but it's possible the other driver has already got a pre-emptive strike in and you're possibly already over 24hrs since the incident anyway?
hmm now i'm a bit worried again, it was a lady police person i spoke to, wasn't just a civilian drone person, she was a full on copper. my wife was there as well so we would both be saying that we reported it. i do have her badge number (is that right?) and she said it was fairly pointless as the other woman left first, so she left without giving details. to be honest i was just relieved that she (wpc) said i'd done the right thing.

considering the police station in our town is closed as such, she would probably end up at the same station as me anyway.

i'll sit tight for now, i certainly don't want to worry the wife, she is not looking forward to the flights next week (hates flying hugely) and after being told it was ok, it would make her worry.

i'll have to get the daughter to open my mail in case something comes through. i wish i could email info and responses back and forward.

the insurance company know I have reported it as well, and they have a record of me warning them so i'll see what happens.

thanks for the advice.

Good on you for admitting your fault. Otherwise two motors clipping mirrors with no witnesses would just go 50/50....
thanks, to be honest, when she carried on and there were no brake lights etc, i thought she must have just had hers banged in and it was mine broken and she was just going to carry on. I didn't even see her drive into the car park, mind i was trying to clip my mirror back in without killing my optional extra land rover spider smile

i didn't say to the woman at the time it was my fault as i am under the impression that can cause the insurance company problems if something comes to light etc.

i'll pay the increased premiums and also ask to protect them from now on in, can't believe i've been that daft, paid it for the others and not my own, doh!

all in all it's an odd week, i knew my luck wouldn't last, i got a tax rebate, so i should have realised something crap was going to happen smile

sorry for the thread resurrection, but i just wanted to update things.

i went on holiday on the 13th july, and whilst i was away I got 2 emails from my insurance company 1 saying they had not heard from the 3rd party and the 2nd saying they had decided to close the claim and it would not affect my ncb.

so i'm not sure what was up with her position, i wonder if she was waiting for me to offer cash or to pay myself and got worried when i was saying i wanted to use the insurance companies.

thanks for all the info and support, all's good now.

oh except i now have to get a new mirror on the land rover smile
