Mrs caught without road tax
Discussion
Just got a letter through and Mrs has a court summons and she was caught without road tax.
Her tax ran out on end of March and she was caught at the end of May. (gawd knows know or why she didn't renew)
By time summons came through she had renewed tax.
What likely to be the outcome? £1000 fine??
Any input gratefully received.

I'm amazed how people seem to be getting done for no road tax since the change away from the paper disc (I wonder if it's just people playing silly beggars of course). I never looked at the disc and just waited on the letter, which still comes through on time every year for my bikes, cars and van.
I'm sure there would be other letters to advise you to tax your vehicle ahead of a court appearance. Of course, I accept that this is PH and nobody ever receives any official letters ever until the process is at its end game.

It just occurred to me last week that my tax must be due, so I dug through guy the pile of bills that arriv d while we were on holiday and there was the reminder. I always used to be aware of the date on the tax disc. Given we pay tax online now, I'd prefer it if the DvLA sent the reindeers by email and/or text.
To drive around for a maybe a week without road tax is possibly excusable if one is feeling somewhat charitable.
Two whole months? Sorry, shouldn't be on the road, who knows what else is being "forgotten"?
Insurance? MOT? Fixing worn brakes? Highway code?
Not only is it two months, but it's also been allowed to get to the court stage. As others have pointed out, there is surely at least one prior stage before actually getting a summons.
Sorry to sound so unsympathetic, but...I am!

An advantage of paying via direct debit is that it does indeed auto renew.

I pay both my cars by DD....one is an annual DD because it's not very much money, the other is an older car so the amount is larger and I do that by a DD twice a year.
Don't want it going out monthly, it's a pain and they charge more to do it that way, whereas the annual / half yearly ones they don't. At least I think that's how it works.

I'm not making excuses for her and don't expect any sympathy. What's done is done and I'll make sure it's taken care of in the future I'm just wondering what the fine was likely to be.
We were away when the letter came through and the date the summons was for (her parents emailed and got an acknowledgement), I guess the next step is to get back in touch with the listing officer and get a new date sorted? Does she have to attend or can she plead guilty on the letter?

I've never let mine expire but do they just send a reminder and then nothing until it's court time?
Quick google suggests a reminder letter, followed by an automated £80 plus buy the road tax penalty, court is a last resort and well down the process. Zod said:

I would love to see my postman trying to post a reindeer through my letterbox.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
