Hi all,

I'm due to collect a car next Wednesday afternoon (the last day of the month) and the current tax, paid for annually, expires on the same day.

Am I going to have to pay an entire months tax (band M) for the sake of a couple of hours or am I able to wait and tax it the following morning?

Even though tax has been paid for all of September by the current owner would the DVLA system flag a non-tax notification if the change of ownership date was the 30th and no new tax was purchased until the 1st?

I'm sure this whole process would be vastly easier if I were to collect the car on the 1st but the logistics of selling my current car and traveling to collect the new car mean it isn't a feasible option.

This is a private sale - any advice gratefully received.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll be safer to suck it up and lose 1 months tax to keep everything perfectly legal. If I didn't tax it until the following day part of me would be expecting a fine from the DVLA when they found a discrepancy between the change of ownership date and the tax renewal date.

I'm now in two minds whether to pay up or wait; £40 fine if caught with no tax compared to £42 for a months tax - unless I'm missing something?

I'm usually very risk-averse (much to the disappointment of some on here...) but even I can see the odds are quite favourable.

My main concern is if the seller completes the transfer of ownership via the DVLA website as soon as I leave (instead of posting the V5C) as I've got to run the gauntlet of all the cameras on the M25. In my mind the DVLA website will update everything in real time and the 1st ANPR camera I drive past will have a fine on my doormat the following morning!

Collected the car yesterday afternoon and taxed it 1st thing this morning - will see what happens!

A potential get out of jail free card is that when I collected it I drove straight to a booked MOT appointment, then drove it straight from there and parked it on the drive until today. The DVLA website says:

You can only drive an untaxed vehicle on a public road if you’re driving it to or from a licensed station for a pre-arranged MOT, vehicle identity check, or weight or emissions test.

I've always assumed this only applies to vehicles that have been off the road and the previous MOT has expired. However, it doesn't say this doesn't apply to vehicles that have a valid MOT and you're on the way to renew it.

Potential win, or am I setting myself up for a fall when the fine arrives and I try and explain this logic to the DVLA?
