I bought this Charger a few years ago in Aldi. On Saturday just after connecting it up it went on fire. A quick disconnection saved the day.
Aldi has a 90 day returns policy with original packaging. I've got the packaging but long ago dumped the receipt, I bought it at least three years ago, maybe more. It's worked fine most of that time but I noticed for the past year it seemed to switch itself off which a gentle shake often cured. As can be seen from my photos the cable melted just where it goes into the charger body.

Am I entitled to a refund, do I have to go to the manufacturer ( 1 year warranty ). IMHO there is a problem here and they should recall them or at least fully examine mine. I'm afraid if I just send mine back by registered post all they'll offer me is a refund, the postage would nearly cost that.

I know, I know, but surely something like the wires should never wear out, otherwise they would all go on fire at some future date. Are we expected to life the charger so, and who decides. The wires looked perfect when I plugged it in on Saturday, when I picked the unit up in my hands to better position it , it began smoking and this is what caused the damage to the wires, they were so hot they melted their coating.

Ok. I'll bin it. My point is it went on fire, IMHO it should never do this, not in a million years. I did nothing which would cause it to go on fire, a little shake now and then shoould not cause a fire. It's not the money, it's that there is an inherent fault in it that could burn your house down next time. I think they should recall them all.

And, yes, I'm buying a C Tek next time, though I have two other Aldi/Lidl ones and they are doing fine thanks in case you ask. My latest car deserves a C Tek though which I'll buy now.

Mods can you move this to the Aldi Food thread please as they're a much nicer and more understanding bunch of posters there.

No chance of a refund. Open it up, feed the wires back through the grommet and carry on. should be fine
Opening it worked a treat. ( though I had to tap it hard with a lump hammer as it's a sealed unit ). Someone's mother on here who's son posted re her problems with white goods sent me a diagram showing how to do that.

Thanks for the info re the AGM CTek, I'll be ordering one. And for the record the car went flat after 10 days only.

It's not a GT3, it's a GT3 RS. Aldi and Lidl have some well made, good stuff. How can you make a generalisation their stuff is st, go over and look at the food thread and you'll find the exact opposite. I would'nt park the RS in their car park though, or any car park.
Flex was fine AFAIK when I plugged it in, no sign of melting or shorting.

Maybe that's where I'm going wrong, I usually wrap up the leads the same way that they come in the box , using those little black metal ties that they also come from the factory.

Lesson :

Dump Chinese one

Buy C Tek

Don't wrap up or coil leads, hang from wall.

We can close the thread now, move on, nothing to see !

Personally I'd be more concerned why the fuse in the plug didn't blow first - sounds like it was 'over-sized'.

Had you ever had to change the fuse?

If so, was it replaced with one of the same rating?
Interesting point that. I never changed or went near the fuse or plug. When the incident happened it was the end of the output wires near the unit that went wallop, so would the fuse blow or would it just burn out internaly? The only reason I ask is so as I know in future.

Whatever having a charger go bang and council have in common I don't know ! I'll open it up inside just to have a look, now where did I leave that lump hammer ?
