Average Speed Cams - are people really this thick?
Discussion
I dont understand it either.
It took me 2 weeks of arguing with the other half explaining how it works, she now gets it but jesus christ how hard is it to understand?
The A1 roadworks past the metrocenter is down to 30mph in parts, a workmate of mine got a ticket for 39 in the 30, he didnt slow down from the 40mph limit further back up the road, as 'nobody else slows down.. so why would i?'

I bet there are loads of people who don't understand it. There are probably loads of people who live out in the sticks who don't realise they even exist. Must admit, I can set a speed limiter on my car and am guilty of playing the 'how far over can I get away with' game. Most of the time I bottle it and set it at 53 or so.
A taxi driver once told me that you could be done by one of these even if you did not exceed the speed limit as they are AVERAGE speed cameras.
Try as Mrs BC and I did we could not get him to understand that it was impossible for an average speed to be any greater than the max speed. We gave up.

The level of innumeracy is frighteningly high.
EG:
I buy two £4.99 items on a market stall and the trader gets a calculator out. Looks stunned when I tell him the answer.
I have a relative who is a very senior civil servant. Cannot use a calculator or a spreadsheet.
Joe Public gets to vote but can't add up.

Has anyone here, or someone they know, had a ticket from an average speed setup?

There are three types of people in the world; those who can count and those who can't.EG:

Market Trader is pretty dim, Senior Civil Servant has minions to do the actual work for him, haven't you seen Yes, Minister?EG:

Shop assistants and bar staff who can't add a couple of things up and have to use the till get my goat...you'd think the lazy youth of today would realise that learning to add up 3 drinks would save them walking back and forth EVERY TIME they took an order, but no...

This may be a blindingly obvious question, but can someone tell me which cameras are actually used to calculate the average?
For example, the M3 road works between Junction 2 and 4. Is it the cameras at the start and end of the journey, i.e. slip road to slip road, or is it any two cameras covering the road works?

They work in pairs covering a zone (1 entry, 1 exit), but only the people who set up the system know which sets are paired. It could, therefore, be any two cameras. For example, the M3 road works between Junction 2 and 4.
