There is a 30mph speed limit repeater in my village.

Below the main red and white roundel with "30" on it - there is a smaller square blue and white sticker applied directly to the pole with "70" on it - facing the same direction as speed limit roundel.

Any idea what (if anything) this denotes?

If the OP's village is in Cheshire, it can't be. Number 70 is miles away - http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/route/route-70

Back to the drawing board... smile
Actually it is right - according to that map there is also a road route 70 (purple on the map) running from South of Macclesfield to Chester.
