This evening I was pulled over because a letter on my number plate has been moved to the other side. Fair cop and I'm happy with that.

After the usual patronising lecture about people making up their own rules etc, the officer stated he intended to give me three points and a fine - fixed penalty notice. I asked him if this was normal procedure as I wasn't aware a licence could be endorsed for this offence. I also showed him my legal plates in the boot.

At this point he just asked me to fit the legal plates and left.

Anyway, my question is: what is the penalty for this?

I've checked gov.uk and it indicates a maximum fine of £1000, but doesn't mention points on licences as far as I can see.

The officer seemed unsure which I'm guessing is why he couldn't get away quick enough.

I didn't get either this time. He just drove off and left me standing there with a screwdriver in one hand and plates in the other. Weird.

It's literally just one letter moved from one side to the other

Eg: F00T JB instead of F00 TJB

It's also 3D lettering which he told me was illegal. I told him it wasn't - he didn't reply. I think he was quite new to be fair.

It matters not because if it does not comply it does not comply, even if its only 'slightly' illegal.
Yes I know and I'm willing to accept a fine/telling off/people calling me a "chav" etc. My point being that 3D lettering isn't illegal in itself - which is what he stated.

I know its not, I cant explain why he told you it was. Maybe it was an honest mistake, maybe he was being a wker, maybe he thought he was the fashion police who knows.
Ironic that this should happen given the discussion we've had on another thread smile

I honestly just think he didn't know what the rules were.

I can confirm my car definitely has plates readable by ANPR.

Guessing your self confessed illegal chav plate is for vanity reasons......so you probably have a personality disorder/self important streak/excess narcissism/low morale/fk the law attitude.

Strange behaviour. And to keep the 'legal' plates in the boot is laughably tragic.

Should be fined and plate revoked imho.

Cheers.

Classy!

I am intrigued, as many are, as to why you feel the need to break the law for purely vanity reasons?

Can you not afford a 'proper plate'?

Don' t you think people look at your woeful 'desperately seeking attention' plate and think.....tool.

Serious questions btw!
1. I like breaking the law.
2. Yes, but I would modify any plate I bought.
3. I like to wind people up so I went a bought a plate and altered it just to annoy people.

Serious answers btw

Not really, your tone on this thread is better than the other, plus its the internet, its full of opinions most are different and in the grand scheme of things doesnt really matter.

But back on topic, you've dodged a bullet so maybe keep the legal plates on the car and the moody ones in the boot from now on.
My tone is always the same, the content isn't - people shouldn't get so easily offended. AV appears to take offence that a total stranger, who he'll likely never meet, has a set of number plates he doesn't like, but will likely never see. Incredible.

I'll probably just continue with them as they are to be honest, it's the first time I've been pulled for them in over 10 years. Like I said, not particularly bothered if I get fined, I just hope the next copper is as useless getmecoat

So OP, how did the guy who had the misfortune of dealing with you today measure up on your personal ratings scale of sttyness / laziness / ineptitude of the entire Police force, as per your other thread?

I assume he should have been doing something "more important" and left you alone, rather than wasting your valuable time due to your poorly spaced plate laughgetmecoat
No no, it's clearly an important crime to get investigated and punished - and also my time is rarely valuable. However, I'm going to put his lack of knowledge on the subject down to poor training.

Let me get this right, you start a thread moaning about the police being to busy to deal with issues, then waste police time because of your illegal number plate?

Why would you put your name on your number plate? Does it make it easier to go dogging or something?!
I'd never thought of that. Not sure how having my name on my number plate makes it easier to masterbate into someone else's car though confused

Legends, all of them.

Oddly enough there's more to soldiering and life than worrying about what someone's number plate looks like. I don't think that many people really care to be honest.

And I wonder what they say about you
They all think I'm a useless soldier because I have a personal plate on my car. It's all they ever think about when we're on operations. I'm always worried the hate is that bad I'll be the victim of "friendly fire". It's real seat of the pants stuff
