Could that MP have been reasonably expected to know where the £10,000 came from or should he just have taken it in good faith?

So the police chanced upon those irregularities while investigating fraud in football. How much crime is now not being chanced upon due to tax discs no longer being displayed in windscreens?

My possibly flimsy tax disc comparison was that the police learnt of this not properly declared political donation when investigating fraud at the football club, a case of pulling the piece of string and see where it goes or 'following the money'.

The press have previously reported how police officers have detected other crimes or criminals from spotting or stopping a car without a tax disc. I hadn't thought of tax disc forgery or tax disc theft as a positive of scrapping them.

Having read a bit more about that Northampton football case, it seems that MP was previously the leader of the Council that lent the people running Northampton football club £10M to keep it running or redeveloping the ground/site. The money the Council 'lent' to those running the club has disappeared, but those running the club that took the loan donated to the political fund of the MP that was previously the leader of the Council. Seems like a bit of a bung and slightly unethical.

The tax disc analogy is how many times does one bit of criminality lead to more? I remember one poster on PH saying 'Those that Speed are also likely to commit other crimes', which isn't a view I subscribe to.

Wasn't this a topic of discussion during the last general election.

Then it got hushed up very quickly because the party leaders both received significant donations from dodgy donors.
You're right:

Update from yesterday.

He has a degree in politics and been a political adviser so as he's not worked in Finance or Law I suppose he could have an excuse for not being concerned about money laundering or where the money was coming from?

I don't know why the police have to probe it rather than investigate it.

I hadn't got there. I was thinking of potential links to former Northants Police and Crime Commissioner Adam Simmonds and his 'faith' agenda and whatever his plans were for selling the police HQ or turning it into a school.

BBC Northants has reported Labour have said there should be a by election this morning.

They've just mentioned an Italian banks and 'crony capitalism' on Radio 4's 22.00 News. 'Crony capitalism' would seem to apply to this case with this Tory MP.
