Near the Queens Medical Centre on Clifton Blvd in Nottingham there is often a camera van. It sits at the bottom of a hill catching motorists who are on a dual carriageway with Armco both sides and not a pedestrian in sight because there is an overpass. "It's because it's outside a hospital" is their specious explanation (my wife got a ticket from it).

Today however it was parked on the opposite carriageway, again with Armco both sides, catching people who were a tad to eager to get up to 50. You can see the 50 sign in this photo and the van was just before the silver car

There was pretty much no danger at all being caused by anyone accelerating to 50 a bit early. So have I missed something or was this a bit cheeky?

There's a pavement, and a lot of (normally drunk) students round there.

It's not a pavement Tom, as far as I am aware. I's a narrow apron at the side of the road which would be difficult in the extreme to access. Here is a picture of the beginning of it.

There is a person walking on it in the first picture you posted.
You're absolutely right, there is. Probably the camera van operator going back to the van after buying sandwiches.

Take it to court then and argue it on the basis that your wife was still driving in a safe manner.
My wife hasn't been caught by a camera in that location, as far as I am aware.

What astonishes me is why those safety vans are there in the first place when the Nottingham ring road is covered from one end to the other with more average speed cameras than probably the rest of the county put together (well apart from Annesley close to jun 27 M1), and which cost the taxpayer tens of thousands of pounds each year in operating costs. Last time I heard that they were running at a huge loss due to the low average speed attained by motorists unfortunate enough to be driving along the ring road, especially close to Queens Medical Centre, which regularly turns into a gigantic car-park.
It's because the cameras finish just before that point one way and it's at the bottom of a hill the other way, so it's a happy hunting ground.

The cameras you refer to are over half a mile from the point shown in the photo in your opening post.

The number of people who ignore the 40 past the hospital and accelerate away from the cameras amazes me. And, the slip road that comes on to the A52 at that point (making the third lane) is always busy and many people pay no attention to cars coming from their right as they approach the top of that lane. And, as already mentioned, there are a lot of pedestrians round there - students from the medical school and workers from the Lenton Lane industrial estate area. Oh, and there is a college on the traffic island under the flyover too.

Nearer the hospital is also a short slip road where many people lose the ability to manage their speed in order to safely join the carriageway. Made worse by people going to fast and having to brake hard.
I've not measured it, I'll take your word for it.

But most of the pedestrian activity is not on the A52 is it? It's underneath and to the sides surely?
