Range on camera vans

Anyone know what range there is on camera vans?

I was coming home along an NSL road that has what must be a good 4 mile straight section, when I noticed the van about half a mile in front of me. I reduced my speed pretty quickly as you tend to do when you spot one of these wretched things whether you are exceeding the limit or not, but I've been wondering since if I had have been over the limit if the van would have got me at that kind of distance.

Interestingly I noticed when I got about 300 yards from the van there were some "dragons teeth" speed markings painted on the road, but I don't think the vans actually use these anymore.

I did wonder if they would bother setting up in a position where they could be seen from so far away if they would not be able to catch any offenders. 600m is a fair old range.

There are a couple of really long stretches around Stirling on the A811. They must be close to 4 miles, there is almost always a camera van skulking about on them too. Had some close calls sighting vans after multi-car overtakes when I used to commute through that way. Straight, flat road as far as the eye can see and there are still folks doing 45

The one I was on and referred to in the OP was between Woodhall Spa and Martin in darkest Lincolnshire. It's a good 4 miles and totally flat too, as things tend to be round here.

As they are actually generating revenue for the police (if those caught go for the awareness course), then they will probably be the very last thing to be cut.

Just to close this one out, today is the 14th day after I spotted the camera van. I have not received anything in the post from the camera partnership, so if I did happen to be exceeding the limit, I must have been out of range.

The images supplied to me with the NIP showed the close image, (yes, I was driving) with the far image's digital readout edited into the frame.
I kicked up a fuss there and then about 'photoshopped' evidence, and the possible interference with the other car, and got a letter a week later saying "No further action".

Interesting. Do you remember what range was shown when you were just a blob?
