I have noticed over the last couple of weeks the 60mph to 40mph zone coming into London on the M4 has had a number of average speed cameras put up. I assumed there were some roadworks coming. But oddly there have been no signs to accompany them - 'Speed Camera Not In Use' etc.

I didn't think they were active as there only appeared to be one camera in the 40mph zone. But this morning i noticed hidden on the other westbound carriageway gantry there is a small yellow camera that has appeared pointing onto the eastbound carriageway whilst in the 40mph zone.

Does anybody know if these are active. As like many motorists I am generally significantly exceeding the speed limit when leaving London in the evening (although I wont be anymore) to join the M4. I was last night and I was this morning.

Do I have some tickets in the post?

It is awful bud, isn't it.

I'm glad I don't need to commute any more. I miss it, but with these Roadworks....

I would be half tempted to have a remote flip up plate fitted. Proper council I know.
The cameras are super sneaky. There is one big one like normal size where it turns into a 40. Then they are small AS mounted on the Gantries in the 40mph zone all the way into the a4. They are going to coin some serious revenue off of those as people will think the end of the cameras are the last big one.

Although I am still to meet someone who has ever been done by an average speed camera!

ETA: Remote flip up plate is a one way ticket to jail mate. Perverting the course of justice. Better to have no plate!

Can we confirm exactly where these AS cameras are?

The OP says "the 60mph to 40mph zone coming into London on the M4"

but the Shmart Mway link says "M4 junctions 3-12"

Those are different locations.
The last of them are on this gantry now where the cut out bit is. Two pointing east and two pointing west. Very Sneaky

They have recently (last week) been installed just after M4 junction 3 Hayes, Eastbound into town, and run all the way to Junction 1 the end of the elevated section. Westbound heading out of town, they run from Junction 1, the start of the elevated section, all the way to the end of the elevated section where there is a freestanding yellow camera post. New signage has been put up this week on both the 60mph and the 40mph sections saying speed camera and average speed cameras in use. This is all very recent, so not sure if they are commissioned yet, but no doubt it won't be long. They do not appear on the Garmin (Cyclops) speed camera database yet.
Yup - I first spotted them a couple of weeks ago and posted a thred here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

They are the new average speed cameras - the old Gatso style ones are being removed (the one on the elevated section opposite the Sega building has already gone).

Basically, stick to the 60/40 limit from Heston right through to Chiswick Porsche! Outbound, they are on the gantries again, from just after Porsche through to the start of the M4.

Lots of people seem to be unaware. It can actually be quite dangerous now sticking to the limit (on a motorbike) for this section frown
Yep, I have just returned from holiday to find a few of the Gatso's gone, signage up and people still doing 85mph in the 60 section. Like you say I had cars all up my ass this morning trying to do 60 and then 40 as I knew the cameras were there.

I think a few people will be getting hammered with fines if these are active. Quite little publicised about it considering how major the change is!

Nice one humpy. I have been doing the speed limit there just in case...so they are right in that they are doing their job!

I had an R1 roast past me this morning in the 40mph zone at 80+ mph and thought he must know something I don't!
