Just wondered if everything with the nova box on my blackbird is fine. When driving normal forward its quiet.

But when driving in reverse the box is very loud and makes a metal ratling sound.

Didn't drive faster then maybe 10miles in reverse but the sound tells me not to drive faster!

I don't feel embrassed by the noise, but want to be sure that this is normal and there is nothing wrong with my box.

How do your reverse boxes sound like?

regards

Christoph

Hey,

i just removed the drain plug and there was already a part of the chain hanging on it and lots of shavings.

So drained the box, the oil was red but it was only about 50ml in there.

Then i opened the box, from the internal it still looks fine. Not much wear to see.
How do you get the chain out? I could not get the lower chain gear out.

I gladly have a spare chain. So i hope i will get away with a good clean, new chain and fresh oil.
That service was really overdue.

What is curious, i found that part of the chain, but can´t see a missing part on the chain...hopefully this mystery will dissolve once the chain is out.

Will let you hear how thing go on.

Okay,

i tired that, but can´t get the lower sprocket out.
Are you sure, that i don´t have to unbolt the 30mm nut from the drive flange outside of the box?
I tried to unbolt the nut, but also failed as its torqued down very strong.

I will post some pics this evening.

Yes i just did it the same way as you did. Worked fine, box is already reassembled.

The old chain still looked fine and out of some marks on the inside from the casing, that have been caused by this sleeve that was rattling around in there everything was in sound condition.

But where the heck is that sleeve from?
Its out of hardened steel, 11mm long, outer diameter 6,3mm inner dia 4,5mm.

I searched for a place where it could be from but coudn´t find! Its definite not from the chain, as the diameters don´t match.

The only place where i could imagine that it belongs to is the leaver, that engages the dogs for clockwise and anticlockwise rotation.
In this one is a unused hole but with a smaller diameter than this sleeve. And even it would belong there, i can´t imagine for what.

Anyway, for precaution i will change the oil another time after the first drive as there was a fair amount of dirt in there.

Thanks for your help.
