this looks great, but I wonder why the Low powered engine?

https://grrc.goodwood.com/goodwood-revival/caterha...

Also why has there been no emails or announcement on the Caterham Cars website?

I guess it is in keeping with the original Superlight of 1996 which was 1.6 and 133bhp.
There aren't many other options for the sigma.. Caterham are clearly reluctant to revive the 150bhp tune which is a shame if you ask me.
Let's hope that's the thought behind the marketing direction!

So then we can only hope the next announcement will be for a Superlight R, followed by a proper Superlight R500, and put an end to all this lightweight press marketing of non exclusives like the 420r and 620r, which we all agree are good cars, ( but let's be clear not great desirable cars!) and back to a range of exclusive Caterham models that people really have a want and desire to own!

Oh come on Nigel, you know how fast the little Sigma really is winklaughbiggrin
Agreed Grant, and as I am sure you will delight in telling me your car was clocked faster than my R500 at Thorkmorton! wink

Seriously though, I am almost tempted to go for one of these, ie go back to complete basics and simplicity!

There is a lot to like about that level of raw purity, and I like the fact that it's going to be rare too!

Well in time honoured tradition I have done something irrational and Gone with my gut instinct and ordered one of th Twenty Models today!

Ordered it as a kit too, will be delivered in March 2016!

Back to basics, plain alloy body and all the other bits pure carbon!

Only 135 BHP , how will I ever cope! winksmile

Excited much!

Wow, now that is decisive. Vaguely interested at 9.30 - deal done by tea time. Good work, that looks lovely
Even more snap decision than that James actually! Emailed the showroom at 09:15 and Greg called me back at 09:30.

After we confirmed what was included and that I would be the very first customer, the deal, was done at 11:00 Am and deposit paid!

I don't mess around me! wink

I admire your decisiveness. Are you able to confirm what is included in the spec, please? Just to push me over the edge! Thanks.
Of course buddy, especially if you are going to be a fellow Twenty owner! ( I feel some sort of nickname for those of us that are going to be owners! The Twenty Pack perhaps! wink )

It's essentially a 260 model, but with the choice extras added.

For my own peace of mind I got these items confirmed that they were included:

Upgraded master cylinder .

Upgraded front brakes with vented disks

Sports Bilsteins suspension with adjustable platforms.

New BMW diff and LSD ( that's the nice smooth quaint one!)

Rear adjustable anti roll bar.

And despite the fact it says only a few items are available as options I added what I consider to be essential for super lights :-

Lowered floors

FIA Roll Bar

battery master cut off.

The left will,be as it comes, ie raw and simple!

Remember - Just add lightness!

I can't imagine why most people who like or own Sevens (I'm both ) thinking a 420R (for example ) is neither great nor desirable. Given the carte blanche spec possibilities you can order just about any model of Seven just how you like it. I did anyway and 40k miles later I am still besotted. On the right day anyway
Hi Coppice,

Sorry was not meaning to run any of the new models down, I like them all, and was seriously considering a new 620r.

But my point was that they all seem just a bit normal, and I mean androgynous as Caterhams , that should really be a very special, and hence unique car.

As an owner of an R300, R400 and two R500's the new models seemed to miss something, can't say what the exact secret sauce is, but they don't seem to be special enough?.

A source I know well who is connected to the factory has told me they are concerned about unit sales of the 620, and very concerned about him may owners are selling them after a short period of ownership.

In their ow. Right all of the new models are great cars, we all know that right, but something is missing and its that secret sauce that's missing which relates into lack of sales.

Still we all keep buying new cars fro Caterham models , so they must be doing something right!

Answering my own question, factsheet from Caterham states 13" Apollos on Avon CR500's.
That is what the fact sheet says, but Greg from CC told me yesterday when ordering that there is not a fully finalised spec yet as it has only just been announced!

There is not even an order form and build list to sped the car up as yet, so will be interesting see what my receipt says when it comes in the post.

I suspect a few changes will be made, and the fact that Avon CR 500's are as rare as hens teeth might mean we see them changed to perhaps ZZS version.

Ah, thanks for the explanation.
I am off to see my dealer on Tuesday. He has said he can get me on the list without a problem. I understand there is a dealer briefing on Monday, after which we may learn more.
No probs, I assume your dealer is one of the newly appointed one, perhaps Williams cars in Bristol area?

If I were you I would speak to Greg at Caterham cars showroom too, he can give you answers from the horses mouth as it were!

Let me know if you need his contact details happy to ping them across via PM for you!

I hope you have got your check book ready.! wink

Blimey as in good value or as in expensive?

I suspect you guys think it's expensive for what you get, especially as it " only " has 135 BHP!

However when I sat down and built the spec this car has it comes to almost £30k for the kit version, that I have paid £26995.00 for .

And that does not include the mega cool limited edition 620R seats, or the special logos and chassis paint, as well,as the other unique items.

So is it expensive? Well yes, but is it relatively good value for money in the Caterham model range? Well hell yes!

Plus to own a piece of history, and something pretty unique, well then I reckon that's worth price of admission alone!

To be accurate it's not unique, there will be 20.

To me it doesn't seem much more than another edition with a twist, however it's portrayed. I find it hard to keep up with all the new variants especially if you include those made for other markets.

Still a nice thing though, as they all are. Hard to practically justify the cost in any case with a Caterham. I bought a new SLK350 at the same time as I bought my R400 kit. The Mercedes was the cheaper buy!

Wow., thanks for that major deflation and downer! A glass half full person view then I take it!

That looks absolutely stunning in those pictures biggrin

What is the special chassis paint bit?

My old 7 used to make the r500 look underpowered but I reckon the most fun 7 I had driven was a xflow with a gentle cam and a pair of weber 40's. The driving experience was amazing and you could actually drive it hard for more than a few seconds on the road. If you got the wrong gear in a corner you noticed it. imo its not about the bhp but the way it drives. This probably shows I am getting old!

Dont forget pics when it arrives cloud9
We are led to believe it's the same paint on the chassis as the 620R, the spec sheet mentions it twice, but in two different styles! On one section its says gun metal grey,,and another titanium coloured paint.

We think it looks like,this:-

Sorry, didn't mean to do that - it's a nice car and as good value as any other 7.

And no, not a glass half full (or empty) view. I don't care whether a glass is half full or half empty - I'm having another drink!
No worries, I was only joking too!

I think at that time last night, I too was enjoying a glass too!

Mine was medicinal of course, as I was trying to,kill my man flu with a large single, malt! wink

Just had information back from Greg at CC that they have now sold 10 of these cars!

That's pretty good going for a limited edition model that was only released just four days ago!

If anyone else is seriously thinking about one,,and can't quite decide I would act quickly to get an order in now.

If they can sell 10 cars in four days, including a weekend period, then they may all be sold by Friday this week! wink
