Has anyone done this personally and could offer some wise words on dealing with the american dealerships and the possibility of tax-free sales...?

I'm a bit of a mustang fan and have abused a few hertz hire cars on trips to the US but the prices that UK importers seem to be charging has really put me off getting one so far.

In the past I used to import cars from Japan so the paperwork side of things doesn't bother me but I know next to nothing about american dealers and how they work..

So if anyone has an experience of them i'd appreciate them sharing some insights..

Thanks guys..

looks like the mustang OC guys have got a load of information on their site about doing just this.. Including a friendly dealer in florida..

Time to start working out what kind of mustang I want..

Think i'll be after a V8 Convertible this time round.. though the Saleen 281 does look absolutely stunning..

Did you buy your Saleen new or used Steve

Gotta be honest the Saleens look fantastic but i'm not 100% about buying used in the US for export..

I'm not honestly sure steve..

If i'm buying a car thats new from a dealer i'll arrange it all from the UK and cross my fingers that its ok on delivery. Used is trickier.. As you've got no way to have a car inspected unless you do it yourself..

I've found a friendly ford dealer who understands whats required with an export sale. So i'm not worried about that.

I'm currently looking at the US e-bay motors site to get an idea of used prices for the Saleens..
