I was expecting it to be good, but not that good.

The review read well until...
Eurogamer is one of the few sites I'll trust with reviews these days. FC2 wasn't as bad as you make out, it had moments of greatness and introduced loads of features that games are still trying to catch up on now, the dynamic fire, weapon deterioration & freedom to go about your missions however you liked, it just suffered by being far too repetitive in nature, to the point where it was a grind.the review said:
A lot of this stuff was true in Far Cry 2, of course, but while that game was also magnificent in its own way
Sorry, but FC2 was a steaming pile of st, reviewer fail, take with a pinch of salt. Don't think there are any spoilers in this, but a nice extended look at the gameplay:

I'm actually slightly confused as to which version to buy
Insane edition is out. Way too much for a bobble head
But then there are two further versions available from game and the store I visited couldn't answer many questions about them...
Lost expeditions... 40mins of extra gameplay and a flare gun... Free to pre-order
Limited edition Predator pack... 4 predators to hunt and an exclusive hunting bow... £5 deposit required to pre-order.
What they couldn't tell me is if the lost expedition missions also come with the predator pack version.
Seems pretty pointless if they don't.?
I think the lost expeditions is included in all of the pre-orders, a bit like Nuketown was for Black Ops 2. Looking on this page:Insane edition is out. Way too much for a bobble head

Its going to be quite interesting to see how this one goes once it hits the public. I also wont be buying it until I know without a doubt its not the shambles that FC2 was. After FC2 I vowed to never buy a Ubisoft game againout of principle!
Well if every single press review isn't going to convince you, why would a bunch of PHers you don't know from Adam? The only way you're going to be able to convince yourself is to try it.S3_Graham said:
Got mine yesterday, only played about 10mins before OH came in right when Dennis was telling me allllll about what I needed to do and decided to tell me how good her gym class was. GRR..
Decided not to save it and will re-do that bit tonight!!
We've all been in that situation. Yet I get told off if I happen to walk in and blurt something out whilst Downton Abbey is on.Decided not to save it and will re-do that bit tonight!!

Have never played the previous Far Cry games (never heard of them tbh)
As a newb to the series is it worth grabbing for Christmas?
There's no continuing story, so you're safe to dive in. I'll put up some thoughts after I've played a bit over the weekend, but the early reports suggest it's very good.As a newb to the series is it worth grabbing for Christmas?

This game sounds promising. I may trade in forza horizon for it (which after the extreme excitement of first getting it wore off, I find a bit dull).
I appreciate most wont have explored fully yet but how big does the map seem? Is it as big as Far Cry 2? I felt Far Cry 2 was too big with not enough stuff in it - so much empty space and having to run for miles!
Not sure on the map, but this has a much better fast travel system, similar to Skyrim really, once you've captured an outpost you're free to fast travel to it. I can remember getting around in FC2 involved catching a bus to the station nearest your objective, then getting a car and driving to it, then the same in reverse once you were done. Doesn't look like there's a lack of things to do either, with one complaint being that there's almost too much to do in each part of the map.I appreciate most wont have explored fully yet but how big does the map seem? Twice so far and the second time I jumped more! I have never seen one swimming though so maybe you can't hunt them. I got leather from killing it but not croc leather.
I saw one lurking under a bridge and killed it, so you can spot them first, you're right about only getting leather though, don't think they feature on the crafting recipes. The Skyrim with guns description is pretty accurate. I was sticking to the bow, but the M800 sniper rifle with long range scope and silencer is my new favourite toy. Bit disturbed to find I was enjoying a bit of Skrillex whilst razing some drug crops last night though...

My only grumble so far is that you can't drive the forklifts. Imagine how cool that would be. You could lift things up and drop them on people, or light a fuse in the gas bottle and roll it down a hill into a camp.
Nothing to stop you sticking C4 to a hang-glider, boat or a quad and doing the same though...AndrewEH1 said:

The one negative in my opinion is that finding loot and looting corpses seems pretty pointless. Sure you can turn stuff into a bit of cash, but you don't find anything special i.e. like in Sky Rim. I'm not sure I can be arsed looting anymore.
Once you have all the necessary upgrades for your weapons you don't really need cash. Bullets and explosives are cheap and you usually pick them up during missions/guns on the ground from killing folk.TimmyWimmyWoo said:
Not sure if I was using the wrong thing, but I tried C4 and it didn't stick to stuff. Unless there is some sort of satchel charge as well as C4?
I've seen this:From this video:

So I presume it can be done.
edit: You can only stick it to certain places it seems, work your way around the vehicle and his hands will change position, suggesting you can place it there.

Something I've been wondering: do more weapons turn up later, or is the initial set of typically three star weapons (e.g. SVD Dragunov and M-something for rifles) all you get?
That's all you get, though attachments will bring them up higher than 3 stars. You do unlock signature weapons which are all 5 star rated though by completing various objectives, these are under the signature weapons section, cost a lot more and can't be modified, but are damn good.Spiritual_Beggar said:
Don't want to entice spoilers.......
But
Are you sure Steve? There are apparently 43 guns in the game (according to the achievements page in game) which is quite a lot more than the initial set you can buy.
Ah, OK, well in that case I'd guess that more become available after you reach the south island. But

think you were right first time.
From the website:
6 Handguns
5 SMG
3 RPG
3 Shotguns
3 Sniper Rifles
6 Rifles
5 Machine Guns
4 Knives
4 Miscellaneous
I've only got 3 handguns available to me currently, plus the Cannon signature weapon, so I'd bank on more appearing at some point, likewise I've only got two shotguns and 2 sniper rifles. I'm not sure the signature weapons count with regard to that list, as they're effectively modified versions of regular guns. From the website:

My only gripe is that the map feature isn't "in-game" as it was in FC2; you have to pause out of the game to look where you're going, where as you could look at it in game (whilst driving) in the old one.
I'd forgotten about that, spent most of my time with the map in one hand attempting to navigate to the next objective. They've done a fairly good job with being able to place waypoints now, but it still isn't always clear which road you need to take. The buggy tends to help in those circumstances, where I tend to stick to the Back to the Future mantra.funkyrobot said:
I have read somewhere else on here that you can destroy the alarms at the camps. Do you just shoot them to do this? Ta.
Yeah, though there are sometimes more than one, shooting them will only disable them individually. Best way is to go up to one and disable it by holding down the action button (X on 360, Square on PS3, no idea on PC), this powers down all the alarms in the camp/base/boat.Gassing Station | Video Games | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
