Sniper Elite v3
Discussion
There didn't seem to be a thread about this.
Has anyone else got it? I picked it up a week ago for the Xbox One, having enjoyed the second one on the 360.
In a nutshell it's the same game, but with much less linear maps, improved everything and even more atmosphere. It keeps bringing Hidden and Dangerous 2 to mind (one of the achievements is even named after that game), and the stealth elements are really well developed and satisfying. Waiting on a rocky desert outcrop for a plane to fly past so you can mask the noise of your 150m testicle shot on an unsuspecting Italian guard is good fun. The fact it will then plaster TESTICLE SHOT across the screen in size 24 font is fairly tasteless, but what did you expect from a game with absurdly graphic x-ray killcams?
It's still rough around the edges - the reticle for my scope disappeared tonight, and some of the enemy bodies do odd things - but I'm really, really enjoying it. There are about eight levels I think, but each one is taking between one and two hours on average. The worlds are much bigger and more detailed in the previous outing, and you could play through each level differently several times - a corridor shooter it isn't.
It's also incredibly pretty in places, such as when the late afternoon desert sun is broken by the black smoke of Nebelwerfer rockets going up, and the god rays are broken by low-flying planes.
It comes closer than anything I've played in a decade to stirring up the feelings the Hidden and Dangerous games did, which is a good thing (and I haven't fallen through the floor yet, like H&D1!). Detecting guards' patterns for a silenced pistol headshot is gratifying, as is skimming a bunch of dynamite up to a gun emplacement before retiring to a distance and sniping said explosive. There are enough tools to give you a couple of options for each situation.
So if you thought about picking it up, I'd recommend it. TESTICLE SHOT!

It's amusing but priced at £40 on the PC it's way overpriced for the content, which is pretty generic stealth game meets generic linear ww2 FPS. It's obvious saving grace is the sniping mechanics and the gore.
That said it's managed to keep me going back for a stage or so now and then which is a mean feat for a game these days with me.

Want to get this on the PS4 but I am not paying £50 for it. Not sure why just because it's "next gen", it automatically gets a £50+ price tag (some games are £60!!). Next gen title prices are a joke to be honest, especially compared to the PC.
£40 is about my limit for games of this type unless I think I am going to be playing it for a long time so I'll wait till they drop the price on this one.

There is plenty to see and do in it, just get it for a last-gen console and make a big saving. I doubt it scales up very much at all on newer machines.
I'm really enjoying it though. It seems a little flakier to run than the previous game, but it's much more ambitious so I can understand the engine being stretched to it's max (it's a hoary old thing). The graphics are dire and it's a bit glitchy.
On the plus side, the levels are massive, with multiple routes through and plenty of ways to tackle your objectives, and the sniping and stealth action is very good. There are also masses of collectibles and achievements to enjoy too, so have at it!

I finished this the other day, just doing a quick achievement run now with a friend on co-op. The game is decent, the graphics aren't amazing, but the levels look nice. It was certainly a lot more fun sniping across the Afrika campaign landscapes than another drab, bombed-out European setting.
The gun choice is fairly moot, especially on higher difficulties. Stopping power is far more important than any other stat, especially on Sniper Elite difficulty, when even a chest shot from the most powerful gun, with all the damage boosting mods, is not always a one hit kill. The Gewehr semi auto rifle is pathetically weak to the point of useless, the M1 the same, the Carcano is better but the Enfield has better damage output, so you only end up using the Enfield and nothing else.
The kill cams are still good fun, and the vehicular destruction cams are nice too. However, some things really irk me about the gameplay, and that is bugs. Whether it's the aim indicator disappearing or flicking around the reticle as you aim, enemies seeing you through solid cover etc, it wears thin, it feels sloppy, rushed and unpolished. Also, not being able to shoot an enemy through a tent, a wooden fence or at times, a fking bush, does grate. As a game about sniping, you'd expect even a WWII rifle round to be able to penetrate a tent.
The achievements are glitched, the final 2 weapon upgrades on the last level don't spawn for me, and even though my game stat shows that I found all of the sniper nests, the achievement didn't pop for me.
In all, good fun, and a good concept but it was just rushed, and I think it has suffered from being a cross platform development. The XB1 graphics aren't amazing, so I bought it for the 360 instead, because it was significantly cheaper, and in this rare instance I didn't think the XB1 version was worth the extra. However, it's clear that the 360 has been pushed by this game (and even in 360 terms, it's not amazing), so it really is time for them to bury this hoary old engine.
The end of the game suggests they want to make another one, but if they do, I really hope they focus on next gen consoles only, leave the 360 and PS3 behind, and take their bloody time getting it right.

I enjoyed my first playthrough on normal difficulty. It felt like the game was pitched right there. You're right about stopping power being the defining characteristic for a gun, I'm on my second playthrough now doing co-op on Sniper Elite and the number of times we've had chest shots that glance off and stagger an enemy are ridiculous. But then, these are the rifles that can't shoot through the leaves of a tree, so what are we to expect? The gun choice is fairly moot, especially on higher difficulties. Overall, it's a good game and the concept is better than the second game, because the open levels and greater emphasis on verticality is good. The relocation mechanic is good in that in allows you to open fire and move on before going back for another shot from another position, but like most of the mechanics in the game, it's a bit spotty. The enemy AI can be utterly dreadful; sometimes enemies are as dimwitted as cattle and sometimes they respond like Terminators - it's inconsistent though this adds tension, somewhat unwittingly.
The game also feels a bit unfinished in terms of story. The story is clean cut enough, but it's little more than a thin excuse to shoot your way through a few desert canyons and oases. The resolution is as lightweight as you'll find in a game, and I suspect the 'Grey Wolf' DLC was actually supposed to be part of the main story which ended up being repackaged and sold on as an extra.
Despite it's failings though, I'd like to see Sniper Elite come back. The end of the game does hint that there will be more to come, though it's hardly a cliffhanger, more like "we're nicely wrapped up here, see you next time". I'd like to see the series perhaps move to the Korean or Vietnam war, and of course, be produced specifically for XB1 and PS4 next time around.
Anyone help me on mission 6, Kasserine Pass? Killed everything and everyone I can find, walked about shooting trying to get the enemy to show up but no good. Been up in all the sniper's nests, tagged the last one I found, still no good.
Primary objective to eliminate temple guards still stays up.
Pissing me off no end now.

Probably glitched, this game is buggy as fk. You should probably restart the mission.Primary objective to eliminate temple guards still stays up.

On Kasserine, once you kill the temple guards, it usually triggers two or three trucks of troops to turn up. Has that happened?
Had to play through the mission again and all of a sudden it came up with the message that they'd been defeated. Weird but glad I did. Just clearing out the big tank factory.Guvernator said:

Have you not noticed that the price of PC games has been getting more and more expensive in line with their console equivalents? They used to be £29.99, then £39.99, now £49.99. £40 is about my limit for games of this type unless I think I am going to be playing it for a long time so I'll wait till they drop the price on this one.

Picked up the ultimate edition of this game yesterday it is really quite fun.
Single player story is a bit woo usa usa but MP is very fun.
Just ordered the Ultimate Edition too - hoping it will fill the gap between Destiny DLCs and a much improved BF5.Single player story is a bit woo usa usa but MP is very fun.
What's your PSN username, I think there's a co-op game mode we could play through maybe?
