C'mon then, who is playing?

I know it hasn't be officially released in the UK yet, but there are a few apk files floating around on the internet already.

If you haven't seen anything about it yet, here is some info: Pokemon Go wiki page and the trailer: Youtube Video. For those that have played it, it uses the same map and location points as Ingress.

I'm pretty sure this is going to be huge when it is officially released, Japan and Australia are already going mental over it.

So; who else is playing, what is your level and which team are you?

Don't be embarrassed, everyone loves pokemon wink

I got it at the weekend, hardly have a chance to go look around, I'm level 6 with 23 Pokemon. Really looking forward to official launch in the UK.
When is it out in the UK?
Unknown; but rumours about that the release date is being pushed back another few weeks to a month due to unprecedented demand. The servers are struggling to cope already and they haven't even globally released yet....

Well I've been playing a lot this weekend, the OH is also in on it. Covered a good few miles over the weekend and finally hit level 12 last night.

It is crazy how many people are playing this already; I live in Bromsgrove (small town outside of Birmingham) and the high street was empty last night (typical Sunday) aside from 30 odd 16 to 30 year olds roaming around playing this. Absolutely crazy!

I was catching a local gym with the OH and we got talking to a bunch of lads also playing; turns out we are the same team (Go Team Valour!!!), so we go together and hit 4 gyms on the bounce. We literally just chatted about the game and what we'd learnt so far, really interesting stuff.

My current team:

I'm quite a good way into it now, so happy to help other people out with some of the mechanics. Likewise, if anybody else has learnt some good things, shout them out smile

The folks of Sydney already walk into things because they don't look up from their phones, this just made it 100 times worse.
Idiots will be idiots unfortunately; personally I haven't really noticed a problem, but then again, I keep my phone in my hand by my side and stop to check if it vibrates. It'll get better once they allow notifications to work when the lock screen is on. Stupidly, you have to keep the phone open a the minute...

Du1point8 said:
Already seen 2 people almost get run over on the way to work, because they were on their phones, I can only assume PG.... hearing reports of people being mugged as muggers are planting things to attract pokemon and waiting for players.
Also heard this, but not anything in the UK yet. Hopefully a few horror stories from abroad will make people engage common sense. Only visit pokestops that are in a public place and you are with other people.

Du1point8 said:
Also they are creating pokestops in locations that a group of people can ambush and mug people.
Highly unlikely and likely a bit of media spin. YOu can't create Pokestops, they are imported points from Ingress, an existing database. I have heard you can message Niantic and request a Gym/Pokestop, but you have to provide a valid reason (none in the local area/rural location), but there are no guarantees they will listen.

Ran out of Pokeballs, now what? Without paying for more.
Pokeballs can be gotten 3 ways; Pokestops, leveling up or buying them.

Pokestops are the best way. Go to your local town/city centre, plan a route on the map (walk down the high street or visit a big church) and literally swipe as you pass each one. I had no pokeballs left at 5pm; pop into the town centre and had 80 within an hour.

Leveling up is hit and miss, some levels you get 10 or more, some you get none. It's not to be relied upon anyway, as leveling up can take ages and you'll run out long before then.

Buying them; an option, but not one I would take. I'm trying to crack on as far as I can without actually paying for anything. So far, it looks like you can compete quite easily without paying, the trade off is lots of exercise though. As long as you get out and about, you shouldn't need to pay for anything.

Niantic are going to be hailed as the video game company that saved a generation of fat teens!

Its great how whichever city your in depends on the type/class of Pokémon available, I work in Portsmouth and its all Electric class,

So what are the rare/hard to get characters then? if I remember rightly back from my youth it was MewTwo that was hard to get?
I get a lot of Pideys, Drowzee' and Zubats near me, great for grinding the levels.

Mewtwo was the ultimate rare one, we also have the legendary birds, Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno. They have spaces in the pokedex, so must be available.

I hatched a Kabuto from a 10km egg last nigh, they can't be too common.

One thing I am struggling to understand; with rare pokemon, how are you supposed to be able to get enough candies to evolve or power them up? My Kabuto, for instance, needs 50 candies to evolve. That means I need to find at least another 15 to accumulate enough candies....

For me I'm finding a lot of Pidgey's, Weedle and Spearow's also,

I've got 4 egg's, the one I'm doing the minute is a 5km one, and I can tell you, it doesn't work by getting in your car!, I've done over 20 miles with the app open in the cup holder and out of the 5km I've only done 0.8km.
Haha yeah, that won't work. Apparently the app will only register speeds up to 18-20mph and ignores anything above that.

There are some great pictures on Reddit of guys putting thier phone in a sandwich bag, tying it to their dog's collar and then letting it run around a field hehe

I hatch one 10km last night and I've got another which is 75% the way through. My OH only has 2 and 5km at the minute, so it looks like they are uncommon.

Have you read about the best way to boost levels yet?

IS the whole game about walking around or can you do things from home?

Want to join in but can't be bothered to walk around.
Depending on your location, you can get pokemon appearing at home. Obviously you can just boot the game up whilst you go about your day-to-day business; going to the supermarket, work, walking the dog etc.

To get the best from it though, it does help to go out for walks or visit certain local points of interest.

Give it a go; generally I'm not a big one for walking but I've done loads this weekend, driven by the game. If you've got a partner or mates into it as well, it becomes really good fun.

I've visited parts of town I didn't even know existed.

Protip - Get some mates together, watch some footy/a film, get drunk, go out in the dead of night and walk for bloody hours capturing pokemon.

Bonus - severity of hangovers tends to decrease with exercise before bed!

How long are your phone's batteries lasting? If you have to keep the screen on all the time it must drain quickly?
I'm running an S7 edge and probably dropping 30-40% over 2 to 3 hours; that is using battery saver mode, holding the phone upside down whilst walking and turning AR mode off.

My OH has an Xperia Z5 and it is eating her battery. Running the same setup as me, she will use around 60% over 2 hours.

Even if I plug my phone into a charge pack whilst out and about, it will still discharge faster than it can charge. Using it whilst fast charging, sees a very steady increase, maybe 1% every 5-10 minutes.

In summary, it varies from phone to phone but it will use a lot of battery...

If you're out for a long day, invest in a large charger pack and try to keep the phone inverted whilst walking. Turn AR mode off, it saves battery and makes it easier to catch pokemon anyway.

So if this game is GPS based why not just hack the GPS?
I can confirm this does not work. a friend of mine has been to central park (which he says has an insane amount of Pokestops and Gyms) and he has also been to the Grand Canyon.

It got him a 6 hour "Soft" ban, he now cannot catch Pokemon for 6 hours hehe
Yep, as Ingress players will tell you, the dev team are pretty hot on catching those hacking the game and will lay waste with the ban hammer if provoked.

Most hacks wont work as the majority of the information is stored server side and they can easily spot large distance jumps over short periods of time.

Update now available on Play Store, it just updates your leaked version, so no drama.

I'm guessing it has now been officially released then...?

Anyone else struggling to find high CP pokemon?

I'm level 14 and I only have 4-5 pokemon over 400 CP; whilst my missus (level 15) is find loads above 600 CP.

I swear I'm doing something wrong....

On the plus side, I live on a Pidgey spawn site, so I'm smashing through the levels.
