My son has a PSP. He just bought a new game which requires a software update to version 2.80, this update is on the game disc. He followed the on-screen instructions (at least he told me he did) and the update stopped at a certain point, with an error message on-screen saying to contact customer support. Now it's switched off and won't switch on again. Any ideas?, is it repairable?, can it be 're-booted'?

Any help would be most appreciated.

After further 'research' (phoned Sony) I'm told that it can be repaired, however Sony want £115 and say it could take 3-6 months!!!

I've contacted a few repairers, who say that the mainboard will need changing, (only Sony can reflash it - and they're not interested), one reckons they can probably 'downgrade' it to work then upgrade again for £40, otherwise the going rate is sround £90-100 to change the mainboard.

I like the suggestion of a DIY approach if it's possible, I can access the memory card through my PC and we have another (working) PSP so formatting the card etc is no problem. Any more info on reloading/downgrading/upgrading etc from the memory card?

It costs £115, and I bet that they would delay it. It would go from 6 months, to 9

For £20 more I could get a new one, Sony make some excellent products but their customer service is crap..... furious

As for the PS3 it'll probably have doubled in price by then too.......
