Compact System or Compact?

Ok, so my daughter would like a new camera. She is doing GCSE photography so something reasonably capable but also teenager resistant is required.
We have an SLR already which she has been using (and can continue to use), but I'd rather she didn't take that out and about with her friends/on hols etc as I fear for it's safe return
I've been reading rave reviews of the Sony RX-100 - think we'd be looking at the MK1 or MK2.
However, my sister in law has a samsung compact system camera thing which is my daughters current favourite as it has detachable lenses and is er white.
Any thoughts on which one would be more suitable? Thanks!
