H/D gearbox mount
Discussion
Changed my gearbox mounting while I was under the car recently for one of the heavy duty ones available on Ebay.
Bit different to the one that came off (well knaerd and only 2 or 3 years old) but a bit of jiggery pokery, a slight modification to the crossmember and it's in
Gearlever now stays where it should be and doesn't dance around wherever it wants to !

Mike, what was the nature of the cross-member mods?
please excuse the poor photo, was taken by reaching under the car, pressing the button and "guessing".The chassis was "relieved" a little at both sides (yellow arrow) and a little metal also taken off the mount so it would pass straight up and bolt to the gearbox.
As you probably know, the original style of mounting sits on those chassis members.
Amount of metal is minimal, would not effect a return to standard if required.
Weight of gearbox is now taken by original cross member (A), via a packing piece (B),cut from a piece of scrap 20 x 50mm box section I scrounged. Two M8 bolts go through the mounting, packing piece and cross member. There are two drilled out and shortened M8 "long nuts" (used for joining allthread etc.) in the packing to prevent it crushing and I used two more to replace the "past their best" bits of tube where the bolts that would have held the original mount drop through the chassis to help support the crossmember (by the arrow).
Not a five minute job but, there again, not exactly major engineering and it keeps me amused

You're welcome!
Oh, you may be thinking how about just a plate of some sort to "make the mount same shape as old" ?
It wouldn't be that simple, before trimming off the chassis brackets I sat the new mount on those ledges and it lifts the gearbox a little. this may not be enough to cause issues with propshaft angles etc. but it did mean I couldn't get second or top because the gear lever hit the bodywork!
Old one is at work, if bin hasn't been emptied will measure tomorrow!
I went for an "up-rated one" because the gear lever seemed to dance around a lot... in hind sight probably largely due to the mount being split, hadn't expected that because it was not that old.
Only bought a different size because I c**ked up and bought wrong one, although I don't know if the correct one is available in "heavy duty" ?
Think this is the right one but they didn't used to be that expensive!

This looks good quality
It certainly does. If I can't get that measurement can you get under your car reasonably easy (access to a lift/pit?), the two bolts come right through the little cross member so should be fairly easy to measure, if exhaust not in way?foot2firewall said:
Is this the same fitment?
Think so. TVR-Stu said:
or a crawl under the car beckons!
If the weather gets a little milder (as forecast) by the weekend I shall more than likely be back under mine, one or two bits to finish off and tidy up on the rear anti roll bar, will get that measurement if I remember will probably remember just as I put the jack and stands back in the garage
