brake upgrade choices - 278 / 283 disc which calliper
Discussion
i have never loved the brakes on my s feeling they could always be better...t best wooden but effective at worst easily over-heated
i am tempted by a four pot front solution on a large disc but i am considering t a simple larger disc set up 1st?
mintex m1144 are not generally to my liking though
trouble is i have been spoilt by bmw and mercedes awesome brakes and desire the same on my fun-machine :-)

New master cylinder fitted.....plus I had some new TRW standard front XR4i rwd pads in my garage to suit the 260 discs 60mm piston calliper set up I have. So pulled the pistons and gave them a good clean, put them back, bled the system again to try and chucked away the cooked and cracked m1144's. The brakes then work fine in gentle / normal use but having had issues I am minded to 'step-up' a level and I want rid of the 'wooden' feeling, which may or may not go with new / better pads and discs?
I suspect one of my calipers had seized (despite new pistons seal etc less than 18 months previously) due to tighter than ideal tolerances perhaps caused by excess heat in use caused by the bent clip behind one pad or simply caused by misalignment caused by the clip cooking the inner edge of the pad a lot and the disc a little and in turn tilting the piston causing a bit of seizing?
Having stripped them both down I was appalled to see early signs of corrosion behind the dust seal when the pistons are only 2 year old! The main body of the pistons is fine however.
If I am to invest in refurbishing callipers new discs and pads it seems sensible to do some man maths and add something a little extra in the search of braking ZEN!
A mate of mine has a V8 capri with some mondeo v6 fronts that he is going to let me offer up ?
I am tempted to say the ideal answer might be the 283 disc / 278 but I am as yet unclear what calliper and carriers will work best with this set up. I want something easy to buy / replace / repair and that you can get seals and pads for without too much hassle.
So. Does anyone know for sure which callipers and carriers work with the 283 disc set up? with or without calliper fettling! I can then ebay some, try them for fit and have refurbed and fit if all good to go.

The results....... They definitely do stop, don't fade, do stop again, still don't fade (repeat many times) and they definitely DO stop and DONT fade!
283 ventilated fronts turned down to 278 to minimise off-set issues, 273 ventilated rears from scorpio cossie, new handbrake cable, master cylinder and stainless braided throughout (with less junctions and full conversion to metric fittings)

Standard 278 discs need 10mm spacers at the callipers due to the offsets being different, which i wanted to avoid.
283 have a very similar offset to originals, which allows no or 1mm spacers but need diameter reduced or carriers releaved to fit. I was not happy with the 'releaved calliper' idea. The 'meat' is there for a reason I felt.
I felt that a turned down disc diameter was a better solution and only cost me two-beer-tokens.
I have a full front 278 kit here that I'm happy to sell as I just bought it to get the rear calipers I wanted.
All callipers have been refurbed by 'biggred'
