Hi All

I have just managed to crack my windscreen (no idea how, it just decided to).

I have insurance to cover it, but is there likely to be an issue getting hold of one? It is one of the green screens if that makes a difference.

Well, I'm going to risk Autoglass.

I'm not sure I'm doing wisely, but when I called, their system said the job could only be done at an outlet, and would take 1/2 a day which I thought promising.

I also had a word with the guy and he seemed to know what he was talking about which was encouraging. Possibly I have been being rather unfair to them by thinking of them as a kind of windscreen Kwik-Fit.

Cheers for the link. I did a search, but it only came up with a thread from 2009!

I did wonder whether the 'bespoke' nature of the cars might cause issues...!

I think I might take some photos around the windscreen area, just in case there is damage later.

It's booked in for Tuesday. I hope it goes well...

I'm not sure who they're supplier is, but they seemed to be able to source the screen quickly enough (a green one too).

If this wasn't an insurance job, I would probably have gone to one of the recommended people here, but that would have over doubled the excess and sadly I really don't have the money right now. I wasn't really planning on this at all.

I will have to be happy with the job though, or it will have to be done again which is a load of aggro I can well do without...!

Thought I'd give people a quick update in case it helps anyone else in the future.

Just got the screen changed at Autoglass Watford. Very happy with how its turned out. Admittedly it took almost 5 hours, but they did say it could be a lengthy job.

They managed to get a green screen in a couple of days, and it now looks better than before. It has had a replacement screen already though, so this is not compared to a factory install (which may or may not have been better!).

Did they use a UV resistant backfill (AFAIK, they don't have access to any)?
Not sure to be honest. I meant to ask as you mentioned it, but totally forgot to.

If they didn't, however the surround looks now will deteriorate and look worse very soon.

My guess is they would have backfilled it with the same PUR adhesive they used on the windscreen. I hope I'm wrong, and that they're well on top of their game in this regard.
Hopefully... We'll see I guess!

They used a different tube of material for the backfill, with a smaller gun. Whether that was just for ease of dispensing though, and it is all the same stuff I couldn't say.

They did say not to touch the backfill for 24hours, while the adhesive apparently goes off in an hour or so, so hopefully it is the correct stuff.

The guy who did the work said he'd done a number of TVR's, and they were all quite painful experiences...

Still, he reckoned the worst car he'd ever done was a classic 300SL gullwing, which took 2 days!
