As a rookie S3 owner I have been trying to educate myself about its braking system but still know very little...anyway,would these fit and be an upgrade on the standard front brakes which have,I think,240mm discs?

OK,had a re-read through all the links.
I can see that mainly they refer to fitting the 887/888 discs which are 283 mm diam.
The ad that I linked to are brakes to suit a 260 mm disc against the standard 240 ones....a slight upgrade, and someone does mention this as possible fitment.
The stuff in my link is new but old stock calipers, carriers and pads, add a pair of new discs and you have a set of all new front brakes, and a mild upgrade for only about £150,which seems to me a great deal IF they fit.

Stopping power is pretty much all in the pad compound you use, if you fit bigger discs but happy shopper pads you will more than likely be disappointed.I can see that mainly they refer to fitting the 887/888 discs which are 283 mm diam.

Stick with your existing set up (assuming it's in good order) and fit a top end pad, you will get far better results.
What pads are recommended? Mintex 1144,Ferodo DS2500,Ebc red or yellow?...etc?
I'm not looking at any track use.

887 & 888 are the callipers not the discs. They can be used with either 278 or 283 discs depending on the carrier used. All the info is in the links so no need to repeat.
Good pads are a given. Personally, I also only use DOT 5.1 fluid too.
Sorry, slip of the finger,I did appreciate that 887 888 are the calipers.Good pads are a given. Personally, I also only use DOT 5.1 fluid too.
