S Club Euro Tour 2015 – Nombre 6 – Le Tour de Franse

For maximum effect please listen to this while reading what followssmile

When Saturday 19th until Wednesday 23rd September

Where France (& a bit of Belgium if your name is Han or Anita and you’re coming from Holland).

What After an event based tour in 2014, for 2015 we will be returning to a full weekend of scenic driving. Our previous visits to areas such as the Ardennes and the Vosges have shown it isn’t necessary to drive huge distances to enjoy great roads so motorway miles will be kept to a minimum in 2015. However some time will be needed on the autoroute to get us from Calais to the good bits as quickly as possible.

Format of tour is the same as previous ones:
  1. 4 nights / 5 days, plus option to stay in Calais the night before
  2. 2 nights in one of the hotels so we're not packing and unpacking every day, plus there is the freedom to do as much or as little driving as you want to on middle day.
  3. Hotels will not be 5 star palaces but will offer a good standard of food and accommodation, be as reasonably priced as possible, etc.
Exact routes are still to be confirmed but the following mileages and timings will give you an idea of what each day will involve.

Friday 18th September
Stage 0 – The Grande Depart
Home to Calais

We will be leaving Calais after breakfast on Saturday so there will be the option of staying in Calais on Friday night for those who want to break their journey from the UK, get the one hour time difference out of the way overnight and start Stage 1 refreshed after the slog round the M25 and through Kent. For any first timers thinking of attending, most people on previous tours (apart from those living in Kent) have taken this option but you do not have to.

Saturday 19th Sept
Stage 1 - Calais to The Morvan
325 miles / 6.25 hrs

An easy first day with approximately 4hrs of motorway to get us beyond Troyes and into the rolling French countryside. From there we’ll be heading cross country to The Morvan, a beautiful national park known as “the green heart of Burgundy”. It’s an area full of quiet, twisty and scenic roads driving

Sunday 20th Sept
Stage 2 – The Morvan to Saint Nectaire
220 miles / 6.00 hrs

There is plenty of scope for excellent roads today so 2 routes will be offered of different lengths. Both routes will have the same 3 elements:
  1. More Morvan at the start
  2. A cross country bit in the middle
  3. Some of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park and a taster of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park.

Monday 21st Sept
Stage 3 – Circular routes from/to Saint Nectaire

Long and short route circular routes will be available today, this time through the stunning Auvergne to the south west of Clermont Ferrand. Some of these roads will probably feautre in todays routes.
The area is known as the Massif Central – we’ll certainly be putting the S’s in Massif today wink The cols are not as high as the Alps but from research the area appears to be very similar to an area some of us are already familiar with… called the Vosges….

Tuesday 22nd Sept
Stage 4 – Saint Nectaire to Troyes
250 miles / 6.00 hrs

Some main roads will be needed today to get us close enough to Calais to make it reachable in a reasonable time tomorrow. However the route will include plenty of scenic stretches (including some more Morvan twisty and turny bits, plus the rolling landscape of Burgundy) as we make our way north to the Champagne region.

Wednesday 23rd Sept
Stage 5 –Troyes to Calais
250 miles / 3.5 hrs to Calais

“The” Tour ends in Paris, unfortunately this one doesn’t because we do not live there.

Prices

There are no event fees to pay this year and, at the moment, the € v £ rate is better than it was so the costs are a less than 2014.

Single £366 (+£55 for Calais)
Double or twin £264 (+£39 for Calais)

Important note - If after paying you are unable to attend I cannot guarantee a refund will be available but I will do my best to get your money back by contacting the hotel and / or trying to fill your place with someone else.

What's included -
  • 4 nights bed, breakfast and evening meals (basic price last year of £288 in a twin excluded dinners)
  • The extra night in Calais is B&B only.
  • Satnav files & maps
  • Loads of happy memories
What's excluded -
  • Channel crossings
  • Dinner in Calais
  • Lunches
  • Fluids (beer & petrol)
  • Anything else not mentioned in "What's included"
  • Someone has already asked about bringing their dog. All of the hotels allow pets but extra charges may be applicable. Please let me know if you do want to bring a dog and I’ll check the costs with each hotel.
Who can come?

This is a tricky one which is getting trickier every year as each tour seems to be more popular than the last.
There are a limited number of rooms at the hotels but how many people can come will be determined by the number of single, double and twin rooms we need.
This is an “S Club” tour so preference will be given to S owners past & present or those who have already been on tour in another TVR model and are part of the S family. If you do not fit those criteria but still want to come please let me know and I’ll contact you if there are spaces remaining. I hope you all understand.

Next steps

I will need a deposit of £75 per person as soon as possible. Date for final balance is tbc at the moment.

If you would like to attend please add your name to the list below and send me an email. Please mention any special dietary needs in your email so I can tell the hotels.

I will reply with details of how to make your payment and also send you a disclaimer which must be signed by you and your passenger. Please return this when you pay your deposit. Due to the way these tours have grown I’m afraid this has become a necessary formality. I know we all go on the tours understanding what is involved but if there is a terrible accident I do not want me or my family to be financially at risk.

At this stage if you are not sure you can come I suggest you contact me anyway so I have you on the list but please remember I cannot confirm your place until you have paid your deposit.

Approx 1 month before we set off I will send everyone satnav files and the PIMP (Project Implementation Plan) which is an informal document containing maps, daily notes, a list of useful things to remember, etc.

If you have not been on one of these tours before, do not worry:
  • Everyone was a first timer once. 2014 had more new people than any other tour since the first one way back in 2010. Most seemed to enjoy it!
  • Racing is not allowed and you are free to drive at your own pace, whether that's like a bank robber or at a more sedate pace.
  • You do not have to follow the routes offered and can plan your own day if you wish.
  • It is not a problem if you do not have a satnav, there are usually plenty spread through the group and we have not lost anyone yet. Well, not for long anyway.
  • The people coming on these tours cover a broad range of ages so do not think you are too young or too old... or too middle aged.
  • If you have not done anything like this before and are worried, do not be. There will enough technical knowledge (NOT mine!) and spare parts in the group to build an entire car.
I know there is a lot of info in the above but hopefully it is of use to someone. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Link to channel crossings topic.

Au revoir,
L'rs

Twin for me please (do not know name of co-pilot yet- if a young blonde au pair I may change to a double) but likely to be Kevin.
If they both want to come I'm happy for the au pair to share with me, as long as "she" isn't Kevin in a wig!

I exchanged a few emails with Joe earlier. He's already booked himself onto the 2016 trip!

Niiige, there are plenty of other double rooms booked already (take a look in the list above) which I am assuming are for wives or girlfriends! Taking both might be a bit risky, especially in a 2 seat S Series yikes

Obviously if Tony does get lucky with an au pair then that'll be one less twin and one more double wink

Liam & Colin don't look very happy. May be it's because they were wishing they owned S's? hehe

I received some funny emails earlier.

phillpot's email to v8s4me said:
Despite a rather big Birthday this year I'm still not quite ready for the GTS though Joe, so it's first into breakfast and first out the car park every day (well second actually coz I never have a clue where I'm going)
v8s4me's reply said:
Yes, I had realised there would be no lie in’s on this trip and I know I’ll be playing with the big boys now smile
So with Mike's, ahem, pace and Joe's GTS cunning (always taking the long route, driving slowly, having lots of breaks and still being at the hotel first) this could be the perfect pairing. Well, unless Joe is navigating... hehe

Looks like reduced numbers in the Gentlemens Touring Section this year, but I'm glad you can make it Joe thumbup
