Hi All

I have just changed by gearbox mount, as I suspected it was the cause of a slight knocking at certain revs. Sure enough, the rubber on one side had sheared right through.

I changed it for a pattern one (the theory being it would be better than a slightly perished new-old stock).

However, it has had the effect of raising the gearbox so that the gear lever now hits the bodywork around the transmission tunnel, to the extent that is you put it into 1st, 3rd or 5th, you can't get it back out again. It must be at least 10-15mm too high.

Has anyone else had this? Is it the fault of the pattern part not being made quite right? Everything is nipped up under the car, so the mount is the only thing it can be (but of course there is no adjustment on it as it sits on top of the chassis rail.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...!

I will double check whether it is sitting down properly when I get the car back in the air (I'm currently reveling in a 12hr Saturday shift!). I'm hoping it is as simple as that. I did torque the 19mm bolt up, so possible it needs a little material cut away.

In the photo, its actually in 3rd to try and show the problem a bit better.

I think I need to find at least 10mm. Someone I work with suggested mounting it under the chassis rail and spacing it to the right height, but I'm not too keen on that really.

Well, I've removed the new mount again and compared more closely and the cup that the gearbox sits in is a good 10mm proud of the mounting plate; on the (admittedly old) original the cup is flush with the mounting plate.

This is good in that I haven't trashed the gearbox, which was my first panicked thought, but very annoying as now I'll have to wait to source a new one and phone round factors or sellers trying to find out what their one looks like...

Happily the weather looks terrible next week, so I won't be missing much!

What 'should' pull the mounting together (granted that mounting 'looks' high)... is the bell under the mounting.

Thanks for that - I think I just ordered the wrong one. It is for a sierra/transit which is what I read I needed on a forum somewhere!

I think I need an early capri or escort mount instead though. I'll phone around Monday and see. Can you tell me what that mount you have pictured is actually from please?

Thanks for all the feedback folks.

For future reference, I found if you go for the one from a mkII Escort (among other Fords) you end up with the right bit.

I was very excited to be able to use the odd numbered gears again!
