I've decided to drop the gearbox and replace the clutch whilst the diff is out. Thanks to the information on this forum the gearbox came out without too much of a struggle although because of the weight it was done with some trepidation.
I have two questions that I hope you can help with :-

1) When dropping the gearbox the oil ran out of the rear oil seal, I take it this shouldn't happen so does anyone have any information about how to replace the oil seals, check and service the T9 gearbox?

2) The clutch slave didn't have a rubber cover over it, but when I helped a fellow TVR owner I'm almost certain their car had a cover to help protect it from the road dirt. Are these covers available and used on all S3's ?

Many thanks for your quick response Mike.

In case others are considering any work on their Type 9 gearbox I found this very useful link which might be worth putting in the useful links wiki?

Good to know that the oil leaking past the rear oil seal is as a result of the prop shaft not being fitted. I'm tempted to replace all the oil seals whilst the box is on the floor so my next question is .... how easy is it to replace the three oil seals on these gearboxes and do you need any special tools?

I'm sure it was a rubber cover that fitted over the whole of the slave cylinder including the the release fork. But as you say it might not have been fitted to all S3's
