Busy day on Saturday removing a few bits to drop the gear box to swap the clutch - I had "much help" as its not something I'd tackle alone.

Eventually managed it without removing the engine however I've now decided to send the gearbox off to be refurbed (seal kit and lay-shaft bearings apparently). So it won't be going back together for a few days until it returns.

For info if it's any help to those considering this job, in order to remove the prop shaft after disconnecting from the diff, we had to drop the diff cradle from the top of the chassis to let it flex down on the rubber attached behind the fuel tank to allow the prop shaft to be manipulated back far enough to get the shaft out of the gear box.

Is that the bit that let go in Scotland? I never really knew on the basis of being mechanically uneducated and incompetent.

More £££'s to the winter works.

Scurries off to find, research and cost new uj ..........

Thanks for the heads up Tim

Thanks all for the words of encouragement but I have to confess I'm being led by a very knowledgable chap with first rate facilities that would be completely lost on me but doesn't stop me being in awe of the surroundings.

Still, trying to learn but hopefully won't need to do this work again for quite a while.

You will need 2 replacement U/J kits. Land Rover items I believe. Get the ones with a grease nipple fitted. Not expensive but a bit of an art to replace them. Hopefully your old ones are circlipped in place, not staked. The latter would mean a small bit of machining work.
Also worth fitting a new full clutch kit when you refit the gearbox, unless your old one is fairly new with little wear.
Good luck Max smile
Thanks Glen - I think they're circlip style but will check with my master technician. This job started out as a clutch replacement Glen and is growing the other way, so I have a clutch kit and the driveshaft guide thing too.

I'm not sure about that one ..... here are some alternatives. Same info is in the alternative parts list.

Thanks Tim - did pick that up from the alternative parts list but it's so old and proved tricky to find modern working links.

I think I've now cracked it with these:

Cheers!
