Bit of a daft question but now that I have my S2 running, albeit roughly, she does sound very valve-train-ee. Almost like it's running dry up top. Initially I thought the alternator was stuffed but having stethoscoped it, it's fine.

Could it be a waterpump? Can I remove the rocker covers without messing about with inlet, injectors etc? They are weeping oil anyway so needs to come off at some point.

I'm normally an air cooled guy so these are new to me.

Thanks folks will try all those suggestions.

As far as the noise goes, I'd say it sounds more like its running dry up top (scraping/graunchy bearing on an ancillary type sound) with a bit of tapping.

Hopefully it's not the water pump because that could be a world of pain if the car has been standing a long time.
Why so?

Belt is off. The waterpump spins freely but the bearing is a little graunchy. I think that's the top end sound i was looking for.

However, it also sounds like there is scraping coming from the lower crank pulley itself. What could that be?

Yes there is a toothed timing mark pointer. Will loom more closely at that tomorrow.

The whole waterpump looks to be fairly caked in oil tbh. It may play in my favour...

Any recommendations on a good supplier of waterpump for these machines?

I have to say that between PH putting the brakes on being able to post more than 5 posts within the first 24 or 48 hours (whichever it was) to not being able to post photos or videos in your first 2 weeks of joining(!) I stand by my statement above that this site is indeed archaic!

I'm not on FB but I hear its where the fun is at. May have to rethink that then.

Ha fair enough! In fairness so far I've managed to get her running and troubleshoot a few other things so shouldn't grumble too much really.

Having a missed a few waterpumps this last week I managed to buy a new one from ebay for £19 delivered so that's my job this weekend. I'm also going to do a compression test and some more permanent repairs to get her running right I.e. no misfire. Will report back.

While you're waiting for the pump to arrive you can do a bit of research on removing it. Here's just one of the many threads on here about the problems you might encounter. CLICY.

I appreciate this is the older 2.8 but the principal is the same.

Get plenty of Plusgas on those threads as well thumbup
Cheers bud I'll give it a thorough read. I've been dousing them in plus gas for 4 days now so hopefully no issues.

Btw, given how PH reacts to sales of items, I need to buy a replacement Southco latch for the removable hard top. If I could get a decent price break I'd happily organise a group buy in case anyone else was in need or interested. How would I best do that on here?

Step one: don't do it here do it on FaceBook, unfortunately there just aren't enough people checking in on here these days frown

Step two: Is it worth it? say you get 10% off, about the price of a Starbucks, all that repackaging, labelling, posting, chasing up payment etc. for a few quid!

I might seem a bit negative but I've been there, tried it. Enjoy that coffee, it'll be hard earnt wink
It's a fair point. I can get them at £10.19 a piece and I need to order one anyway (I'll get two to future proof). If they are prone to failure let me know :-)

It's baking my brain how the smooth end is holding tight right now but I'm going to give this a go on my broken part before I pull the trigger on a replacement. I'm sure all will become clear once I start work.
