Travelling back from Ashby Folville yesterday, pulling away nicely.
Went from second gear to try third and all hell breaks loose in the clutch/gearbox area crunching etc.
All pressure was lost at the peddle, but mananged to get her pulled over.
Im hoping its just a /Hydralic/clutch/bearing failure.
The gear is engaged but no forward movement.frown

I really want to be at SCH, so does anyone know of a garage in my area who could turn this around quickly for me.

Many thanks to Dave M and the other great people who pulled over to offer assistance.

Thanks Andy

Will get in touch with Adrian if I need a new Clutch thanks Norman.

The clutch is not engaged and you can select the gears with the engine running.
The clutch resevoir is fully topped up and dosent appear to be leaking
The slave cylinder was replaced by the previous owner.
I Will get her pushed into my garage tonight to check the operation of the hydralics, etc.
If it is just the Hydralics I can fix that, but if its the clutch a garage gets the job.
Thanks for the offer Chris if I do run into trouble you might well get a phone call.

I will let you know how I get on.
Cheers Andy

Hello Graham,

You will be pleased to know she flew through the MOT no problems.Got her pushed into the garage and it looks like the clutch is the culprit. These things happen. My neighbour who has a Spitfire(closet TVR owner ,I am working on him) uses a local engineer he highly recommends meeting him tonight, will also give Adrian a ring, so looking good for S club.

Ant

I have decided to have a crack myself.Quite enjoying it to be honest smile.Should have her stripped by mid week.Found a lot of clutch plate debris when I took the starter motor and slave cylinder off.
Keep you posted

Well the gear box is out, a good old fashioned challenge that was. This forum has proved invaluble and I dont think I would have attempted the job without it.The S3 rebuild link from Mep12345 I think, is spot on and saved a lot of time head scratching. As suspected the clutch has given up,everthing else the diff, propshaft gearbox etc seem fine.
Couple if pics

Thanks gents for the kind response.smile

I will change the spigot bearing be daft not to really.Might have a tool at work that will do the job,if not I will have ago at making the Mk11.

Having had a proper look at the gearbox, the output shaft has got a slight wobble on it.I guess this is not correct. The splines are in good order, should there be any movement from the shaft ? As much fun as its been, I dont really want to take the gearbox out again.
Pic of the removed clutch

Thanks Andy

Looks like further proof that the gearbox CAN come out without the engine.

The race is on to get it back together in time for SCH09 woohoo

Good luck,
Graham
Cheers Graham the race is definetly on wink

Thats confirmed what I thought about the input shaft.Cheers

I think your spot on about the clutch.looks to be the original. So a new spigot bearing is on the shopping list.

Another Question I have I Initially rang Adrian@ about carrying out the work for me.Really nice helpful chap, off to Norway to deliver a TVR he was.I understand he has had to correct clutches, that start to slip after a few thousand miles service.Again not wanting to pull the gearbox out again do you think its prudant to do this mod now,or if I fit a like for like clutch, that should be ok.

Cheers Andy

Better to get the correct clutch to start with than have to take off the flywheel and have it machined!

regards,
Graham
Agree with you Graham thanks for the link. The numbers match so its like for like cheers.

My box came out for a rebuild and even once done there was a small amount of play in the input shaft (quite a bit before as the box was shagged). I assume the spigot bearing is designed to hold it still.

You will need two people to get the box back in really because you MUSTN'T put too much strain on the input shaft and it is a real bugger to line up. The way I did it was to have one person each side of the car with one holding the weight of the box and the other manoeuvring it into position and sliding the input shaft through the clutch and into the spigot bearing (getting it in the spigot bearing being the hard part due to chassis proximity to box webs and freedom of movement)

Good luck

Mark
Thanks Mark your advice is very much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Andy, was more than happy to stop and check you're Ok at Ashby, just thankful it wasn't an accident like I first thought smile

You've done a great job sorting her out, even better you made it in time for today -well done!

Good to catch up today. Not sure if I can make Tuesday (Ashby again) due to domestics, there's also a new one starting at the Ox on the A46 Thursday, see the Midlands thread. It'll be early days for that one but they have to start somewhere smile
Thanks Dave,
Hope all works out for you mate on the home front.

Not made it to Ashby either. but will defintely try and make the Ox,sounds interesting.

Hello Tony

Nice to meet you at SCH,glad to hear the box is out and the puller worked.

The clutch came as a three part kit,

QKT 2030AF
Other numbers/letters on the box were Eqiv MHK 52030.

The spigot bearing is

Still not quite sure how I did get the box out on my own,but I think my adjustable beer belly helped laugh

Good luck getting it all back together. Just make sure you compare clutches the first two offered to me were slightly different to the one I had.

Cheers Andy
