I'm living in Poole Dorset at the moment but want to move closer to my parents and those of Mrs Garyhun.

We want to be about 1-1.5 hours north of High Wycombe (my parents are in Gt Missenden and the other set are in Yorkshire)

Where would someone suggest we do some looking around? We like nice restaurants and pubs, long walks and being close to a decent town or city (10-15 minute drive would be ideal). We have no kids to worry about and work is not an issue either. Ideally somewhere that's got a little character and no chavs would be perfect smile

Cheers
Gary

There's some very nice, chav-free villages south of Notts.
Can you supply names?

Many thanks both of you.

We're planning spending the next 6 months touring around so this will really help.

I am biased but I'd suggest somewhere close to the A1 such as Oakham or Stamford, both full of character and main cities not too far away.
Lots of countyside and Rutland Water for your long walks.
Also good train links north & south from Peterborough, or Leicester.
I've always liked Rutland Water. Our first trip in 2015 is Oakham and we will go from there.

Lots of nice villages and plenty to do round here.smile
When are you coming up this way ?
We're moving into a 6 month rental next Tuesday (complete our sale on the 8th) in Poole, and I guess we'll do our first trip up over the weekend of either 10th or 17th Jan.

Not given it much thought but I guess the more background information the better.

If you want to send down, that would be great. Otherwise just let me know the names and I'm sure I'll be able to find online versions (assuming they have them).

Thanks so much for the offer!

Thanks Daphne - I'll take a look online and if I can't find it I'll send you my address for hard copy.

This is why I still love the PH community.

Happy New Year everyone smile

We were to come up this weekend but I'm seeing snow in forecast. Can anyone with local knowledge confirm if this is true? I think to be safe we'll put the first trip back a week but if someone knows it's going to be 78 in the sun up there, well I think we'll be on our way smile

It's about an 7-8 hour round trip so were going to spend whole weekend up there. Think delaying for a week or so seems a wise decision.

Thanks for the updates.

Only forecast for Sunday now
I just don't want to take the risk of getting caught and not being able to get back for Monday seeing as we were going to spend all Saturday and Sunday up there. We're in no rush so think it's just best all round to delay a week or so.

Long lunch now booked for Saturday in Poole!!

Have a lovely weekend everyone biggrin
