Me & Mrs Torque are going the the NEC on Friday and will need a meal on the way. We don't fancy the motorway services, so can anyone recommend a decent pub close to the M42 between the M5 and the NEC?

The Farm at Shirley is good (been there several times) although you'll need to book. There is also the Boot at Lapworth although further off the M42.

Boot is ok, Orange Tree or closer towards the M5, Vic in Barnt Green which is 5 minutes from hopwood services off the 42.

The Boat in Catherine De Barnes is ok.

I is also extremely close to NEC. And less than 100 yards from my house!

Food is ok. Its pub grub.
That would have been my suggestion too.

The Malt Shovel at Barston is the best pub for a meal close to the NEC. I used to use it a lot for low key business lunches and lunch with my team. Take my parents there regularly. They usually have excellent fish specials.

Its easy from the NEC and will take less than 10 mins. Its usually best to book in advance

Whereas I would avoid it in favour of other suggestions here. The Boot, The Orange Tree (if its the one at Chadwick End) and the Malt Shovel all do better food.

The Bull in Meriden was ok the last time I went. I think there's a TVR meet there once a month or so.

I know it's a chain but the Miller & Carter in Dicken's Heath is a nice place for lunch (and a pint of Ubu if you're not driving).

Second vote for The Inn At The Farm - not far off the M42.

There's also a Miller and Carter in Hockley Heath - equally acceptable.

Another one to consider could be The Punchbowl in Lapworth,

For a lunch time curry, there's Lloyds in Knowle.

The White Lion in Hampton in Arden is quite good.

Also, its on a few hundred yards from a railway station for a train into the NEC.

The Malt Shovel is consistently excellent.

The Boot at Lapworth and the Orange Tree at Chadwick End are also good gastro pubs
