Now we have 4 really silly cars we need to rethink how we look after them, so...

Basic Car Maintenance Tuesdays, 7pm to 9pm, starts on the 7th Jan - £4 per evening
Intermediate Car Maintenance Thursdays, 7pm to 9pm, starts on the 10th Jan - £4 per evening
Next step Car Maintenance 7pm to 9pm, starts on the 7th April - £4 per evening

At West Notts College, Acorn Way, Oak Tree Lane, Mansfield. Call Trevor Burton on 01623 631547 for details.

Unfortunately the Basic course is on a Tuesday so would clash with the MatStarkAmberKelhamThorpe meets but for £4 an evening it may be worth it. scratchchin

Now I was going to call this bloke to see what 'basic' and 'intermediate' meant and take it from there.

Just thought I would post to see if anyone else is interested.

Well that was actually quite interesting! The basic course consists of 10 weeks at £40 for the whole course. The course schedule is as follows:

Overview
Servicing
Brakes
Wheels
Tyres
Jacking and Drainage

Now it is not all dry classroom pointing at bits of car stuff, we are talking stripping down your brakes and refitting them, proper servicing of your car, tuning and fixing. We as a group can ask the tutors to cover what we want. We can also work on our own cars and the parts are apparently pretty darn cheap too. There are about 17 odd cars to practice on in there including a Jag and a Beemer along with less exotic machinery. Full MOT equipment is available including a rolling road! bounce

To say I was surprised is an understatement. Nice clean premises that don't look like a college too. 9 including us so far and from what I can tell a mix of backgrounds. I did ask Lurker not to mention the cars we have, we used the Mini and the Alfa for our 'what car do you have' question thing so if anyone else joins us I would rather they were not mentioned until we were comfortable with it.

The funniest moment was when Lurker scribbled on his notepad Ace & Judas? and held it up for us to see across the classroom hehe

I mentioned that others may wish to join us and they said if you were wanting to then you would need to get there a bit earlier than 7pm next Tuesday to register. C'mon you lot and play car mechanics with us!

May see some of you at car school then, but for now the MatStarkAmberThorpe meetings will not be sullied by our presence. hehe

PS If I have forgotten anything Lurker, please feel free to add/correct etc smile

would a late entrant be welcome?
They are more than happy for people to turn up, as long as you pay your extortionate £4 per night hehe

Plus I can mug you for the cash for the scalextric night biggrin

That sounds great Emma. Some thoughts then:

1. More structure to the course would be good but up front so we know exactly what we are doing
2. If the structure is say 1st week, oil change, Second week changing brake pads and discs, third week, replacing brake hoses etc then if people want to do these specific things to their cars they can book their car and time. I suggest this because it then gives Russ structure and there will be say 3 cars all doing a brake change that week. We can then all help each other with the specific tasks to gain the knowledge.
3. We need to know the price fairly early so we can say whether it is something we want to do. The £40 was amazing value but without funding would it stick a nought on the end? If it does you wouldn't get much uptake really.
4. We need to make a list (now) of the things we may want to do to our cars to give Russ the structure. So I will start off:

Oil Change - Chimaera
Brake disc and pads change - Rear Chimaera, front Ferrari
Brake fluid change and new hoses - Chimaera
Refurbish calipers - Chimaera, Mini
Cooling system fluid change - Mini, Alfa, Chimaera (good one for everyone with winter coming up I thought)
Wheel bearing check, maintenance and change if necessary (Mini, Chimaera and Alfa)
Rocker cover gasket - Mini
Clean and Hammerite structural bits - Chimaera

Can't think of anything else at the mo.
