The new gantry mounted Gatso cameras enforcing the new variable speed limits around the M4 / M5 interchange are now live.

Noticed one flash in the opposite direction on the M4 this morning, so beware, and keep an eye on the posted variable limit. smile

Duly noted, thank you.

Are they still being commissioned? If so, can they issue tickets from them?
No idea, but they flash so I'm not sure I want to try the only way to find out.

I wonder if they monitor the NSL when no limit is displayed on the signs - ie. can you drive through the gantries at > 70mph when no variable limit is shown?

So have the 50mph average speed cams been taken down then? At least that will speed things up a little bit through there (assuming overheads don't all say 50mph too....)
There are still average speed cameras through the parts they're still working on - the actual interchange and part of the M5 south of it, I think.

They're not that well signed though, so it's worth keeping an eye out for when the 50 average limit begins and ends.

When its lit up showing "60" you know it will flash above this , when its not lit up will they flash if you go above "70" or just let you go above the national speed limit?

Who will try ...
IIRC some people have been done for >78mph when no limit was displayed on the sign. In other words, they're always live and should be treated as such.

I can confirm that the Gantry Cameras on the M5 Southbound around the Cribbs Causeway area are active and they are issuing tickets. Received one today, offering speed awareness school for doing 81 mph in a 70mph limit. There were no active limits displayed on the gantries so this is a straightforward ticket for exceeding the national speed limit. Beware if you are passing the area. It was night time so I cannot recall which particular gantry set flashed me but it was in the section between the m4 junction with the M5 and the cribbs causeway area heading southbound on the M5
plus one other for 85.

So definitely no piss taking when nothing's displayed.
