Moving to Brighton - Finally.
Discussion
Well i'm finally moving to Brigton.
After farting about for too long trying to sell my house in the depressed frozen North I've rented the damn thing and I'll be coming to the seaside within 2 weeks.
I'm a northern monkey and aprehensive to say the least as i'm not sure which way work will go long term but i'm very excited as well.
Things I'm looking forward to.
The seaside
The pubs and bars
Going to Goodwood
Drives out in the Sussex countryside
Opportunity
Causing trouble with the green party council.
Things I'm not looking forward to:
£10 haircuts
Not paying £2 a pint
The parking gestapo.
Being stared at and pointed at by the locals as soon as I open my gob.
Seriously though I'm looking forward to it.
See you soon.

Welcome
You'll be lucky to find a £10 haircut! One of my tenants is a hairdresser and Ive seen him charge £160 for cut and colour, ladies obviously (that reminds me, must put his rent up )
One across the road charges a tenner Pfft. I pay £4.50 at the moment but i'm told 10 quid is cheap for Brighton so no choice really unless the oh can start using clippers or I start to resemble a yeti. You'll be lucky to find a £10 haircut! South of the South Downs, Brighton has its own micro climate, which meanssummers are longer and hotter and winter is shorter and milder than
Up Norf.
Expect to pay less in winter fuel bills and to buy fewer warm jumpers.

Used to the cold up here, I was stared at like some freak when I walked to the curry shop in a t-shirt in Feb, My fat reserves also sees to that.

The Evening Star pub, near the railway station. Not paying £2 a pint
Best pub for miles around, in my view.

Will definitely give that a go

The parking gestapo.
Brighton is virulently anti-car. Expect to be a pariah if you own one.Apart from that Brighton is very cosmopolitan.
Stuff that would cause raised eyebrows and a call to the coppers wouldn't even
get noticed there. [b]Expect the wierdos, waifs, strays and dropouts to be
far more prevalent too.[b/] Not for nothing does Private Eye have Brighton
as "Skidrow-on-Sea".
At least Brighton has genuinely ordinary people, Oldham has very few.

I really resent the mess the councils (esp the current one) have made of the road network in the last 20 years - buses-only streets (Western Road and North Street), the 20mph zone and now the bus lane corridors on the coast road and Preston Road. Lewes Road is a b*****y mess now, looks like something a idiot has come up with - a right hash.
I catch the train in for drinks in the evening with friends, but I will never return there to live.
I know what you mean about the council, a bunch of left wing anarchists hell bent on banning the motor car.I catch the train in for drinks in the evening with friends, but I will never return there to live.
I'm a thoroughbred Northerner and yes it's true the roads up here are fabulous and i suspect a lot lot better than darn sarf.
Before I knew the area I dismissed Brighton as just a seaside town. It was only when I explored a little bit of what Sussex has to offer did I realise that the area idea have some great roads. Yes ok maybe not as good as oop north but lets not totally dimiss what Sussex has to offer.
I'll be heading back every 6 weeks or so, so if I want to head out I've always that option.
I will miss the roads and the friendliness of the north even more but let's face it, Brighton ain't such a bad place to live.
I'm just packing up the last of my stuff now ready for the big drive down with a van load on Saturday.

Well I'm down.
No chips and gravy or kebabs on Nan
or shock horror 'Pound Bakery'
Anyway seriously, a massive culture shock awaits me even though it has been my second home for years now.
I'm working for my existing company from home which is great but to be honest i'm not sure if this will work long term so I am thinking of sending my CV and a cover letter out to a few companies.
I am a buyer by trade and in electronics/manufacturing ao i am wondering if anyone knows of any similar sort of companies in the Brighton/Worthing area where I can pop my CV off to?
Thanks again chaps.
Cheers.

Cheers Justin. Thanks for the companies to approach, I've seen another in Lewes but it is only small and i'm not sure I want to work for another small company.
Whilst Brighton hasn't a shortage of pubs i've been struggling to find a decent pub in close proximity to have a drink but last week I think I've found one.
The Preston Park Tavern is very nice and seems (for Brighton) quite reasonable and only a 10 minute walk from my house.
Food looks top rate.

Thanks for the pointers. We go to the butchers for our meat for Xmas and it does a roaring trade. Last year the queue was up the road and a girl from the cafe came up the queue and dished out free mince pies. I love the community feel round Fiveways.
Saying that she popped back and must have sold 30-40 coffees at 2 quid a pop to all those punters who wanted a drink to wash down those free mince pies.
Fair play to them.

Sorry I know this is last minute but a pal has come down to visit his gf and wants a booze round Brighton.
Can anyone recommend some decent watering holes in the centre of Brighton
I've only really been round the Lanes and West Street doesn't interest me as it seems as Brightons equivalent of Deansgate in Manchester.
Bear in mind we're 40 not 20 anymore so can't be doing with kids fighting or moronic bouncers.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.
