Holidaying in Yorkshire

We are planning a trip up to Yorkshire in August (two adults and two young kids). It will entail walks, a bit of relaxation, and a trip to York (and surrounding castles) as the main highlights.

Does anyone have any recommendations on locations and accommodation?

For me, staying in York makes sense, but it's out of town the my wife fancies.

True camping is out, but a spot away from the hubbub isn't a bad call - in a cabin perhaps.
