After looking at the Midlands, France (only kidding), Norfolk, Suffolk and seemingly every other Shire in England, Mrs Garyhun and I (me and the missus in local dialect) have decided that we are moving to Yorkshire.

The reason is that she comes from the area and we now want to be closer to friends and family who are all around the Liversedge area.

We want to be roughly 1-1:15 hours from Liversedge so we're not in each others pockets and would like to be in the nicer areas which I think means West or North of there (but please tell me if I'm wrong about that). Harrogate and villages around York are the obvious places to look but I would love the wisdom of local PHers to help us pinpoint any other areas we should be considering.

We will obviously be asking friends and family but they are limited in their knowledge of all areas so I'm open to any suggestions on here.

Thanks so much
Gary

Sorry guys, I completely forgot to add any details - DOH!!!

I work from home so that will not effect location.
We'd prefer a nice village with some shops that we can walk to get basic shopping (milk, bread etc) and a pub for a beer and a bite to eat. Don't want to be city based.
Happy to get public transport for the odd Leeds night out, don't need to be too close and am happy to get taxis to any other nice restaurants that might too far to walk.
Budget up to £650k but would be great if we could get something for a lot less.

Hopefully that gives you a better idea. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Well for that I'd recommend north and north west leeds. Roundhay, Alwoodley, Adel, Cookridge, Horsforth, Rawdon, Guiseley, Ilkley, Bramhope. See what you think
Many thanks.

We're going to spend a week or two up there in a few weeks time so will research before and then visit while we're up there.

Will let you know.

I prefer the Harrogate area, slightly biased I admit, but I'd consider Hampsthwaite, Pannal, Burnbridge and Follifoot. They're all nice areas with shops and pubs nearby.

Edit: How could I forget Birstwith and Burton Leonard! Both lovely villages too.

That's great thanks. We have Harrogate on our list already so it's great to have the places around that you've listed.

Ah, don't cry little one ..... be a happy bunny smile

We've decided that trying to be close to both sets of parents just ends up with us making massive compromises which could mean we end up somewhere where we know absolutely no one. In Yorkshire we have all Lou's family and most of mine too (sister and all my nephews and nieces) apart from my parents. Plus we have a load of friends that were originally Lou's but are now ours after 9 years, so it makes perfect sense.

My parents will also be able to visit and stay for weeks at a time so they can use ours as a base to see all their grand and great grand children more easily. There's even family in Newcastle which wold then only be 1:44 away.

All good stuff!!!!

It's all good mate, TBH if everyone is up that way bar your folks, I'd be looking at moving them too. From experience its a PITA when they are an 1:30 away, let alone further so we moved from 1/2 way between both to be closer to J's parents as they were the ones that needed us closer and I have my brother living with mine.
My parents may end up coming that way but not until they cannot drive any more. They love their village in Bucks and have a massive group of friends built up over 40+ years.

Many thanks again. We're going to be checking the areas out this week and hopefully view some properties Friday and Saturday.

It's certainly beautiful countryside up here - I was last here 40 years ago so had forgotten how lovely it is.
