30/7/12 update:

Still missing, but regulary being spotted by police/public being driven at very high speed in and around Aberdeen. Can't/won't say too more but as usual, if you are out and about keep your eyes peeled and if spotted please call aberdeen police on number above.

I am becoming more and more concerned about the risk to the public caused by these 'individuals' and their driving 'style', so please make it difficult for them to carrying own getting away with it.

OH and the facebook thing is a very good method of spreading the word - I (well the wife) currently has several thousand likes and shares on the car details

Cheers

The photo above with the blanked out number plate is one of mine (well from the original advert) posted on facebook to try to find it.

Update: 31/7/12 8am

car has been recovered, condition unknown.

To the above posters, I to spoke to everyone I could - taxi drivers, petrol stations, shops etc.

Its hard for me to put my true feelings in writing, as they have been to my address, and I don't know theirs...

However I do know from my own research that at least one of those posted above is already in prison from previous offences.

My car will now be off to forensics for a few days, then off to be assessed for damage. I will then decide what I want to do with the car, as it was my ideal spec that I spent months looking for, and i dont really want to be bullied or intimadated out of it, but also dont want to put myslef and family at further possible risk.

But until the condition is assessed, who knows. The classy individuals involved in this type of thing have been known to drive around putting cigarettes out on dashboards/headlinings / seats so will have to wait for insurance assessments.

Its a wake up call - I thought aberdeen was a relatively nice city, but my amateur sleuthing and driving around has really opened my eyes.

to Haggis et all above,

what generally happens is they drive in then fill up then dirve off without paying - i knew it only had 80 miles of fuel in it (ie £20 ffs) so i did go round a lot of the petrol stations with a note to warn them smile

And the police have been very very good - i randomly spoke to two differnet officers in different areas, and both knew with out prompting the full details of the car (and me) before I told them.

You have to remember that due to resources, there are only so many cars driving about, and most of the time i imagine the stolen car is hidden during normal peoples hours (ie law abiding go-to-workers) so the chance of seeing it pinging about are slim.

Then when it is spotted, if it is being driven at high speed, Grampian police have a no pursuit policy due to the risk to the public - now while it is not nice to think the cops cant 'chase' them, I'd rather lose the car than have it knock over a bunch of kids playing in the street. (although that point of view was wavering in my darker hours)

Unfortunately the police have a burden of proof and need a chain of evidence to stop these guys, and in the real world this seems difficult. And even once caught, the punishments seem low, but that is the politicians/courts fault - not the police.

Oh and to show the power of spreading the word - try searching for the number plate in yahoo and google.

re petrol pumps, i dont know if stolen reg numbers are routinely reported to petrol stations by police

Like i said, i was proactive enough and its a very distinct car (and plate)

Oh and apologies to the seller of this car to me, who wanted that plate back - dont know if he will still want it or not.

Update: 1/8/12

Car has been released by forensics.

General condition is not too bad on first glance, long light scatches down drivers side, all wheels badly kerbed with chunks out of sidewalls.

Interior is not too bad with a quick look - reeks of hash tho.

engine is running rough as a tractor - i suspect blown turbos from the noise, but cant move it yet.

Now is the next fun bit fighting with insurance, ho hum.

Re: the police searching, as already mentioned, when i phoned them and told them that i had been told the car was sighted dumped, they had 3 cars there within minutes looking in the area. cant fault that service, even if we didnt find it at that point.

Perhaps if everyone kept their eyes on the police website for stolen regs and discriptions, then looked out for them, that would be a great help. Its not like we dont all play spot the nice car anyway. Also report all sightings of suspicious drivers with hoods ballaclavas and face masks.

OP update

smile

Also have it on good authority that someone put in all their windows over the weekend.

What a shame, although tbf I doubt its 'their' windows, either mummys or councils

I hope they are at least feeling a bit of the fear my family have been feeling over the last few weeks

Apparently a 4th person charged

presumably people could find out their names by comparing the list of people in aberdeen sheriff court yesterday and today to the list of friends on facebook?

Unfortunately the 4 lads charged with car crimes in Aberdeen are NOT being charged with my car theft, as it was another bmw.

Thats not to say they were not involved, but at this time, there is no one charged in connection with my vehicle.

OP Update:

Sorry, but I can't discuss the ongoing investigation.

On the Garthdee thing, my mother in law also stays there....

Insurance update: due to the engine/turbo damage, the car was written off - currently in discussions about accepting the car back as is, with a cash alternative.

Is it possible to 'haggle' with insurance companies over the valuations?

16 will probably mean a supervision order and no prison.

it would be a shame if he was named and shamed somehow though....

Paper says 3 men were injured and treated in hospital.

What a shame.

The real crime is that its my bloody tax money thats paying for their treatment!

Does anyone know if the court rolls list everyone that is in court that day or just those booked in from ages ago?

Todays aberdeen court list http://www.scotcourts.gov.uk/rolls/sheriff/lists/a...

edit: 5 names from that list today are friends on the garthdeejockyz page - draw your own conclusions

Apparently, from a friend of a colleague who witnessed it, one boy went through the windscreen and ended up on the road.

when approached he was seen to have socks on his hands and was allegedly intoxicated.

Surely this will be enough this time to gain a conviction?

craigie - on average, how long from being charged would it take for them to be in court/convicted?

I seem to see stories in the papers where its 9 months after offences until convictions.

It should be three strikes and out.

Get convicted of any petty crime on three seperate occasions and get sent down for 10 years or so. That would stop the guys sharpish surely?
